Raymond Loyer
Description
Raymond Loyer was a French actor and voice actor, born Raymond André Lucien Allemand on December 3, 1916, in Paris, France, and passing away on September 3, 2004. He grew up in Morocco before returning to France to pursue acting, initially on stage before transitioning to screen and dubbing work. Following his debut in the dubbing industry in 1947, he became one of the most prominent French voice artists of his generation, best known for being the regular French voice for numerous Golden Age Hollywood stars. His deep and charismatic voice became synonymous with actors such as John Wayne and Charlton Heston, whose films he dubbed for several decades.
In the realm of animated series and Japanese-French co-productions, often referred to as anime in the broad sense, Loyer left a notable mark with several key performances. He is recognized for providing the voice of the Sphinx in the classic 1980s series Ulysses 31. Beyond this role, his work in the genre includes voicing the main antagonist Zoltar in Battle of the Planets, a role noted for the contrast between the character's androgynous appearance and Loyer's very masculine voice. He also lent his voice to the character Gasca in Goldorak, had a role as Taarak in Metal Hurlant, and contributed to other animated series such as Princesse Shéhérazade. His voice work also extended to non-anime cult series, such as the voice of Jeff Tracy in the French dub of Thunderbirds and Dr. Theopolis in Buck Rogers. One of his final and most humorous voice roles came in 1993 when he participated in the parody film La Classe américaine, dubbing John Wayne's character, George Abitbol, in a segment that repurposed footage from various Warner Bros. films.
