Kei Ohkubo

Description
Kei Ohkubo is a Japanese manga artist known for creating the historical manga series Arte. She is a female creator who began her professional career in 2011 when her short story Hammer Hammer was published in the magazine Fellows under the pen name Narumi Kei. The following year, she changed her pen name to Kei Ohkubo, under which she has produced all subsequent work.

Ohkubo launched her first and most notable serialized work, Arte, in the December 2013 issue of Monthly Comic Zenon, published by North Stars Pictures. The series is an ongoing historical drama set in early 16th-century Florence, Italy, during the Renaissance period. It follows the story of a young noblewoman named Arte who defies the social conventions of her time to pursue her passion for painting and become a professional artist in a male-dominated field. As of 2025, the series has been compiled into more than twenty collected volumes.

The creator handles both the writing and illustration for the series. A recurring theme in Ohkubo's work is the exploration of gender roles and the struggle for female independence and self-fulfillment within a restrictive historical context. The story addresses the obstacles and prejudices faced by women who sought professional autonomy, making feminist themes a central pillar of her artistic identity. The series is noted for its detailed depiction of Renaissance-era costumes, architecture, and studio practices.

The manga Arte has achieved international publication, with editions released in multiple languages including French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Chinese. The series was also adapted into an anime television series, which brought the story to a wider audience and solidified Ohkubo's reputation as an original creator whose work has been adapted for the screen. Her work is credited as an example of a seinen manga, a demographic category that targets young adult men, though its themes have found a broad readership.
