Matt Kaplan

Description
Matt Caplan is an American actor and musician whose voice-over work in anime is closely associated with the New York-based recording studio NYAV Post. His career, however, extends well beyond animation, with an extensive background in Broadway theater and appearances in live-action television and film.

Caplan was born in New York and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he studied theater at the Governor's School for the Arts before returning to New York City to pursue acting professionally. He has been featured on Broadway in productions such as Rent as Mark Cohen, in the revival of South Pacific, and in High Fidelity. He was also part of the original cast of the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, where he played multiple roles including the school bully Flash Thompson and served as an understudy and later an alternate for the lead role of Peter Parker. In addition to his stage work, Caplan has appeared on television in shows like New Amsterdam and NCIS, and in the film Across the Universe. He has also released two studio albums and a single as a musician.

Caplan's voice acting in anime began in the early 2000s. One of his most notable roles is Johann Faust VIII in the series Shaman King. He first voiced the character in the 2001 anime adaptation, taking over the role from episode thirty-seven through episode sixty-four. Over fifteen years later, he reprised the role for the 2021 reboot of Shaman King, demonstrating a long-term association with the character. His other significant lead role from this period is Keiichi Morisato in the fantasy comedy series Ah! My Goddess and its sequel, Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy.

In the example series The Gokusen, Caplan provides the voice for the character Takeshi Noda, a student in the class taught by the protagonist. His other major anime voice credits from the 2000s include Seiji Sawamura in Midori Days, Raiga in Kurokami: The Animation, as well as roles in Samurai Deeper Kyo, Shura no Toki: Age of Chaos, and Piano: The Melody of a Young Girl's Heart. In 2016, Caplan relocated from New York to Los Angeles, California.

After the early 2010s, his appearances in new anime dubbing became less frequent as he focused on his music and theater career. However, he returned to voice work in 2018 for the English dub of the Italian live-action series Baby. This was followed by his return to anime with the 2021 Shaman King series, where he once again voiced Johann Faust VIII.
