Edward James Olmos
Description
Edward James Olmos is an American actor, director, and producer whose career in voice acting includes several notable animated and anime projects. Born in East Los Angeles in 1947, Olmos first gained prominence through stage work, receiving a Tony Award nomination for the play Zoot Suit in 1979. He went on to achieve widespread recognition for his live-action roles, including Lieutenant Martin Castillo on the television series Miami Vice, for which he won an Emmy and a Golden Globe, and a Best Actor Academy Award nomination for his performance in the film Stand and Deliver. He is also well known for playing Admiral William Adama in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series and Detective Gaff in the Blade Runner films.
Within the realm of anime, Olmos is primarily recognized for a single significant role. He provided the voice for the character Mito in the 2005 English dub of Hayao Miyazaki’s classic film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Mito is a loyal and crusty military veteran who serves as a trusted advisor to the film's protagonist, Princess Nausicaä. This role represents his major entry into anime voice acting.
Beyond this specific anime credit, Olmos has contributed his deep and authoritative voice to a range of other animated films and series. He voiced Chief Tannabok in the animated feature The Road to El Dorado, Diablo in Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and the character Chicharrón in the Pixar film Coco, a role he has spoken about with particular pride for its cultural significance. He also reprised his iconic live-action role of Gaff to voice the character in the anime short film Blade Runner Black Out 2022, directed by Shinichiro Watanabe. Other voice credits include guest spots on long-running series such as The Simpsons and The Magic School Bus. While his body of voice work is extensive, his direct involvement with Japanese anime productions is limited to the Nausicaä dub and the Blade Runner anime short, without evidence of recurring collaborations with specific anime directors or studios.
