Description
Mito is a middle-aged man who serves as the sergeant-at-arms and the chief retainer of the Valley of the Wind. He grew up in the valley and first became a retainer for King Jhil, the father of Nausicaä. When King Jhil’s health declined, Mito transferred his service to Nausicaä, becoming one of her most trusted and loyal subjects. He is easily recognized by the eyepatch he wears over one eye and his sturdy, practical clothing, including a thick coat and a hat with ear flaps. Among the elderly men who guard the valley’s castle—the so‑called “castle old men”—Mito is the leader and the most prominent figure.
Mito’s personality is defined by fierce loyalty, a protective nature, and a constant, affectionate worry for Nausicaä’s safety. He disapproves of her dangerous forays into the forest of the Sea of Corruption, but he never hesitates to follow her into peril. He represents the hardworking, resilient common folk of the valley, grounding Nausicaä’s lofty ideals in practical concerns. His motivations are simple and unwavering: to serve the valley’s royal family and to safeguard its princess, even when her actions place her in harm’s way.
In the story, Mito’s primary role is as a pilot. He is the veteran operator of the valley’s gunship, a small armed aircraft, and he frequently co-pilots it during the Periphery Campaign. When the Valley Forces become separated from Nausicaä, he takes over as pilot. He accompanies Nausicaä when she is taken aboard a Tolmekian airship, and later he follows her into the lands of the Dorok, where his experience with foreign airships proves valuable. Though his command of the Dorok language is poor, his practical knowledge of flying and machinery makes him an indispensable support.
Mito’s key relationships are with King Jhil, to whom he was originally bound, and with Nausicaä, whom he serves with deep devotion. He also works closely with the other castle old men—Gol, Gikkuri, Niga, and Muzu—and with the explorer Yupa Miralda, whom he respects as a mentor figure to Nausicaä. He does not undergo a dramatic character transformation; instead, his steadfastness and reliability provide a stable anchor for Nausicaä’s journey. In the manga, aspects of his role are shared with or shifted to the character Gol, and Mito’s own life is hinted to be nearing its end, but this does not alter his constant dedication.
Mito’s notable abilities lie in his skill as a pilot and gunner, his intimate knowledge of the valley’s aircraft, and his experience in navigating the politics and technology of the warring nations. He is a capable co-pilot who can assume command when needed, and his decades of service have given him a practical, no‑nonsense approach to crisis. While he is not a warrior on the level of Yupa or Nausicaä, his competence in the air and his unshakable loyalty make him a vital member of Nausicaä’s support team throughout both the film and the manga.
