Description
Kenta Shinohara is a Japanese manga artist born on January 9, 1974, in Chiba Prefecture. Before becoming a mangaka, he worked as a salaried employee, which included a period as a graphic designer at a video game company. He left that career to focus on making manga, spending about two years preparing for his debut. During this time, he worked as an assistant to Hideaki Sorachi, the creator of Gintama, using the alias Shintaroh Nakae. He has cited influential creators such as Fujiko F. Fujio, Akira Toriyama, and Takehiko Inoue as favorites.
Shinohara made his debut in 2005 with the one-shot Red Panda Puppet Show, published in Akamaru Jump. His first major serialization, Sket Dance, began in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 2007 and concluded in 2013. The series follows a high school club that helps solve other students' problems, blending comedy with heartfelt stories. It won the 55th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category in 2010 and was adapted into a television anime by Tatsunoko Productions that began airing in 2011. Shinohara also wrote lyrics for a song by the band The Sketchbook, which performed music for the Sket Dance anime.
After a few short works, including the one-shot Towa Fumetsu Devil Point in 2014, Shinohara shifted genres for his next major project. From 2016 to 2017, he serialized the science fiction manga Astra Lost in Space on the Shonen Jump+ platform. The story, about a group of students lost in space, was a critical success, winning the 12th Manga Taishō award in 2019. Its anime adaptation, which aired in 2019, won the 51st Seiun Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in 2020.
In 2021, Shinohara began serializing his current work, Witch Watch, in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The story is a fantasy romantic comedy about a young witch and her ogre familiar. The series has also been announced for an anime adaptation. In addition to his manga, Shinohara worked as the original character designer for the 2015 anime Battle Spirits: Burning Soul.
Shinohara announced his marriage in the fifteenth volume of Sket Dance, published in 2010. He is also the brother-in-law of fellow manga artist Kentaro Yabuki.
