Yasukiyo Kotobuki

Description
Yasukiyo Kotobuki is the author and original creator of the Japanese light novel series The Diary of a Middle-Aged Sage's Carefree Life in Another World. Kotobuki began writing this story as a web novel on the user-generated publishing platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō on February 7, 2016, and the series remains ongoing. The print version of the light novel, illustrated by Johndee, was later acquired by Media Factory and is published under their MF Books imprint, with the first volume released on September 23, 2016. The series has since expanded into a multi-format franchise with a significant publishing history. As of February 2025, the main light novel series had reached twenty volumes, and a prequel light novel series titled The Diary of a Middle-Aged Sage's Carefree Life in Another World Zero: Sword and Sorcery World began publication in August 2023.

The work of Yasukiyo Kotobuki has been adapted into two distinct ongoing manga series. The first manga adaptation, illustrated by 888, began serialization on Kadokawa's ComicWalker website on April 25, 2018, and had been collected into eight volumes as of February 2025. The second manga adaptation, titled The Diary of a Middle-Aged Teacher's Carefree Life in Another World, is illustrated by Maneki and began serialization on Square Enix's Manga Up! website and app on October 16, 2018. This version had been collected into fifteen volumes as of March 2025. Each manga presents the same core narrative through different artistic interpretations, demonstrating the story's versatility across publishers and formats.

The franchise created by Kotobuki has achieved significant commercial success and industry recognition. The combined sales of all light novel and e-book volumes surpassed 4.15 million copies. In April 2026, it was officially announced that the series would receive a television anime adaptation. The animation production is being handled by the studio YANCHESTER, with direction by Takayuki Inagaki and series composition by Hiroko Kanasugi. This adaptation marks the transition of Kotobuki's original web novel from a self-published work to a full multimedia property.

The narrative identity present across Kotobuki's works follows a clear and consistent pattern within the isekai genre. The story centers on Satoshi Osako, a forty-year-old farmer and dedicated player of a virtual reality role-playing game who is reincarnated into a fantasy world as his in-game character, the powerful Great Sage named Zelos Merlin. Despite acquiring immense magical abilities, the protagonist primarily seeks a quiet, peaceful life away from conflict. The core thematic tension arises from his attempts to maintain a low profile as a farmer or tutor while his power and circumstances continually draw him into adventures, including fighting dangerous monsters, foiling conspiracies, and teaching magic to young nobles. This contrast between overwhelming capability and the desire for mundane tranquility is the story's principal recurring theme.
