Hideyuki Kurata

Description
Hideyuki Kurata was born on July 9, 1968, in Ibara, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. He is a Japanese anime screenwriter, light novelist, and manga artist. Since 2003, he has been a member of the creative group Studio Orphee.

Kurata is a notable figure in the industry for his work as a series composer and original creator on numerous projects. His career includes screenwriting for anime television series beginning in the mid-1990s. Among his most significant credits as series head writer are Now and Then, Here and There, Kamichu!, Gun Sword, Made in Abyss, and the R.O.D franchise. He is also known for his work on Oreimo, The World God Only Knows, and Goblin Slayer.

As an original creator, Kurata is best known for conceiving the Read or Die franchise. The Read or Die concept began as a light novel and manga, which he then adapted into a 2001 OVA series, serving as its original creator, series composer, and scriptwriter. He returned to the franchise as the original creator and lead writer for the 2003 television series R.O.D -The TV-, which continued the story of the paper-manipulating secret agents. Beyond Read or Die, he has served as the original manga writer for several titles, including Train+Train, Cloth Road, Read or Dream, Samurai Rising, and HandxRed. The origin of Read or Die traces to 1998, when a company approached Kurata to pitch a female spy anime. His deep love for literature and action cinema, combined with inspiration from a friend's canceled spy project, shaped the series' unique blend of literary references and action sequences.

Kurata's work often involves adapting existing properties for television, a process where he is known for making significant structural changes to enhance narrative clarity for an animated format. His approach prioritizes the distinct needs of animation over strict fidelity to the source material. In his original compositions and adaptations, he is recognized for constructing scripts with careful foreshadowing and for a focus on authentic character reactions, including physical and survival details, which he has argued are essential for maintaining a story's credibility. He has a noted preference for adventure stories that emphasize consequence and realism over traditional heroic narratives.

Kurata is a significant creative force in the anime industry, known for his long and varied career spanning multiple decades and genres. His extensive collaborations with other major industry figures, particularly writer Yosuke Kuroda, have been a consistent feature of his professional life. He has worked on a wide array of successful and critically acclaimed series, ranging from surreal comedies to dark fantasy epics. His later work on the series Made in Abyss introduced his writing to a new generation of viewers and is considered a major late-period success in his career. Kurata continues to be an active and sought-after screenwriter, involved in major productions well into the 2020s.
