Mona Kawai has always been the undisputed center of attention at her high school, confident in her ability to charm anyone she meets. This self-assured queen bee’s world is turned upside down with the arrival of Medaka Kuroiwa, a transfer student who seems completely immune to her considerable appeal. No matter what she tries, from a friendly smile to more direct provocations, Medaka responds only with a stoic, unimpressed glare. What Mona does not know is that Medaka’s indifference is a conscious effort; he is a monk-in-training at his family’s temple and has taken a vow to resist worldly desires, including romantic attraction.

Determined to conquer the one heart that has eluded her and prove her charm is absolute, Mona launches an escalating campaign of seduction. However, her plans often backfire, leading to accidentally intimate situations that leave her flustered rather than victorious. While Medaka works hard to maintain his composed facade, he finds it increasingly difficult to suppress his own growing feelings for the persistent Mona. As she pushes harder to win him over, she fails to notice that she is the one beginning to fall in love for real.

The story is set in a modern Japanese high school and follows this central push-and-pull dynamic from Mona’s perspective. Medaka Kuroiwa is a second-year student and dedicated ascetic whose quiet strength and unintentional chivalry only make him more attractive. Mona Kawai, originally from Osaka, is a friendly but proud beauty who occasionally slips into her native Kansai dialect when her cool composure cracks. Their classmates include Tsubomi Haruno, a girl who idolizes Mona and quickly becomes a supportive shipper of the reluctant romance, as well as Medaka’s two friends, Shou Kobayakawa and Yuzuru Kido.

The narrative expands with the introduction of rivals who further complicate the romantic landscape. Asahi Shonan, an athletic and bold first-year, declares herself Mona’s love rival after falling for Medaka at first sight. Later, Tomo Namba, Mona’s childhood friend from Osaka, transfers to the school. Initially supportive, Tomo finds herself also developing conflicted feelings for the unattainable Medaka, adding another layer to the romantic tension. The first season concludes after establishing these core relationships and conflicts, setting the stage for further developments as Mona begins to come to terms with her genuine feelings and Medaka struggles between his spiritual vows and his heart.
