Description
In a world where a magical energy called Taisu connects all things, a lonely princess named Tashen lives in isolation. By chance, she discovers a pair of twin flowers that allow her to communicate with a foreign girl named Aila, who lives in a completely different realm. Through their conversations, Tashen begins to open her heart and form a meaningful bond with her new friend.
Their connection, however, develops just as the shadow of war begins to loom over them. Aila belongs to a ruling family that seeks to expand its kingdom by invading neighboring lands, placing the two young women on opposite sides of an impending conflict. The story serves as a meditation on the human cost of war, using the friendship between Tashen and Aila to humanize those labeled as enemies. The twin flowers that unite them become a symbol of what is at stake as political ambitions threaten to tear their worlds apart.
The 2023 animated short film Roots was directed by Shuhei Morita, known for his work on Tokyo Ghoul, Freedom, and the Academy Award-nominated short Possessions. The film is part of the Edge of Time anthology, a four-part international collaboration that also features works by Shinichirō Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop) alongside Chinese directors Li Wei and Weng Ming. With a runtime of 24 minutes, Roots explores themes of loneliness, connection, and the tragedy of war through the intimate story of two girls whose friendship defies the borders and enmities created by those in power.
