Description
A young beast races across mythical islands at the dawn of creation, tasked with delivering something essential to the birthplace of the Japanese archipelago. This is the premise of Beast of Kamisari Month, an upcoming anime film that serves as a companion piece to the 2021 movie Child of Kamiari Month.
The story is rooted in the earliest chapters of the Kojiki, the ancient Japanese chronicle of myths and legends. While the first film followed a young girl named Kanna on a journey to Izumo during Kamiari Month, the time when all of Japan's deities gather, this new film shifts its focus to the very origin of the nation. The setting moves from Izumo to the island of Awaji and the mythical Onogoro Island, which legend holds was the first land created by the divine couple Izanagi and Izanami. The narrative traces back to these foundational myths of nation-creating, exploring the events that shaped the island nation.
The central figure is a beast, glimpsed in released pilot footage racing across this primordial landscape. The tagline for the film describes it as the story of a beast that races to the place that gave birth to the island nation. The pilot video offers a brief encounter between two key characters: a hooded individual who resembles the demon Yasha from the previous film, and another character with wings, hinting at a conflict or alliance between divine and supernatural forces.
The first film, Child of Kamiari Month, established this universe. It focused on Kanna, a twelve-year-old descendant of the gods who, one year after her mother's death, discovers she must complete a sacred duty. Wearing her mother's bracelet that can slow down time, she travels across Japan accompanied by a talking rabbit named Shiro and a demon boy named Yasha. Her mission is to deliver offerings from shrines across the country to the gods gathering at Izumo Taisha, all in the hope of seeing her late mother again. That story dealt with themes of grief and finding joy in a passion for running, a hobby she shared with her mother.
For Beast of Kamisari Month, original creator Toshinari Shinohe returns to craft a story that is described as the direct counterpart to the first film. The animation is again produced by LIDEN FILMS, with many key staff members returning, including character designer Haruka Sagawa. The project was first announced in April 2025, and a pilot film and concept visuals were released in October of the same year, with production scheduled to begin in 2025.
