Description
Kannazuki Kanna has spent her life being bullied and ostracized for her appearance. Treated cruelly by almost everyone around her, her only solace is the kindness of a university student named Kosuke Rendaiji, the sole person who ever looked past her looks. Desperate to win his heart and escape a life of misery, Kanna makes a drastic decision: she spends her entire savings on full-body plastic surgery, transforming herself into a conventionally beautiful woman.
Now living under her new appearance, Kanna navigates a world that treats her with a respect and attention she never knew. She secures a job at a high-class company and begins to build the happy life she always dreamed of. However, her inner self has not changed as easily as her outer shell. Still carrying the insecurities and habits of her past, which she calls her ugly nature, she often struggles to behave in ways befitting her new beauty. Her joy is also shadowed by the constant fear that someone will expose her secret.
The live-action Japanese film adaptation, released in 2009, distinguishes itself from the earlier South Korean version by blending animation and live-action. The story of Kanna's life before her surgery is told through animated sequences, while her life as a beautiful woman is depicted in live-action. The narrative also focuses more heavily on Kanna's friendship with her eccentric and similarly unconventional friend, Kabako, a role performed by the well-known comedian Shizuyo Yamazaki.
The central conflict arises when a person from her past threatens to reveal her secret, jeopardizing everything she has worked to achieve. Kanna must confront the truth of her transformation and decide whether her new life is built on a foundation of lies. Throughout the story, she struggles with the shallowness of a society that judged her solely on her looks and grapples with what it truly means to be successful and happy. Her journey forces her to reconcile her past self with her present identity, leading to a climax where she must prove that her worth is more than skin deep.
