Description
In Heian-era Japan, during a rain-soaked twilight, three noblemen gather in a tsuridono, a pavilion suspended over water, to share drink and stories. One of them, a man named Ki no Haseo, confesses a haunting secret: after losing his wife to a devastating epidemic, he sought out the demon known as the Suzakumon no Oni and challenged it to a high-stakes game of sugoroku, a dice board game. The wager was nothing less than the resurrection of his beloved. The narrative unfolds entirely within this moment of confession, as Haseo recounts the desperate bargain and the eerie game that followed. The film leaves open the question of whether the reunion with his restored wife is a genuine blessing or a path to personal ruin, weaving a supernatural tale of human desire, grief, and the terrible cost of defying the boundary between life and death. The visual style employs CG puppet animation with the tactile warmth of carved wood, lending an ethereal, classical atmosphere to the intimate period drama.
