Description
Kyouichi Sudou is the leader of the racing team Emperor, a group whose members all drive Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution vehicles. He serves as a central figure during the storyline focused on Emperor's campaign to dominate the mountain passes of Gunma. His home course is the Irohazaka pass, a challenging route in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture.

In terms of background, Sudou is a professionally trained driver who is a graduate of the Tōdō Juku racing school. He has a personal history with Ryosuke Takahashi of the Akagi RedSuns, whom he considers a rival. This rivalry stems from a previous defeat at the hands of Takahashi, an experience that left a deep impression on Sudou and motivated his subsequent actions.

Personality-wise, Sudou is characterized by a calm, collected, and highly rational demeanor, which sets him apart from more hot-headed drivers. He is driven by a strong ambition to prove the superiority of his driving philosophy, which prioritizes raw power, four-wheel-drive traction, and professional circuit techniques as the ultimate formula for speed. This belief leads him to view rear-wheel-drive cars like Takumi Fujiwara's Toyota AE86 as fundamentally obsolete. He can be a strict and demanding leader, as demonstrated when he disciplines his teammate Seiji Iwaki for disobeying race orders and losing to Takumi. Despite his arrogance and ruthless efficiency, he is not portrayed as malicious. He pursues fair competition, acknowledges the skill of opponents who earn his respect, and cleanly admits his own defeats.

His primary motivation is to conquer the racing scene of Gunma and, more importantly, to secure a rematch with Ryosuke Takahashi to prove that his evolution-based, circuit-oriented approach is superior. Initially, his role in the story is that of a formidable antagonist, leading Emperor on a winning streak. This streak is broken when Takumi defeats his subordinate, Seiji. Sudou then challenges Takumi, not to an official race but to a lesson designed to demonstrate the performance gap between their cars. During this encounter on Akagi pass, Sudou uses his Lancer Evolution IIIs superior acceleration, aided by a misfiring system that eliminates turbo lag, to push Takumi so hard that the AE86s engine blows up, handing Takumi his first loss. Following this, Sudou finally races Ryosuke Takahashi. Despite his car's power advantage, he is defeated when Takahashi exploits a critical weakness: Sudous difficulty navigating high-speed right-hand corners on public roads. Because his home course, Irohazaka, is a one-way road and he primarily trains on circuits, he lacks the experience and confidence to take such turns at full speed on a two-way road where oncoming traffic is a risk.

Later in the series, Sudou undergoes significant development. He reforms from an antagonist into a more neutral character. He agrees to a rematch with Takumi on his home turf of Irohazaka under specific conditions. In this race, Takumis newly upgraded AE86 manages to resist Sudous signature overtaking maneuver at the final bridge. Although the race is effectively a tie, Sudou declares Takumi the winner for withstanding his attack, showing his respect for Takumis growth. He later takes on the role of a spectator and commentator, offering insights during the races of the all-star Project D team against other powerful opponents like the Tōdō Juku racing school.

Sudous notable abilities stem from his disciplined, professional approach. He is a master of strategy, often preferring to follow an opponent to analyze their line and weaknesses before unleashing his car's power to overtake. His driving style is less flashy than others but highly effective, focused on fundamental skills and consistency. His signature technique is known as "Simulation III," a calculated counterattack to pass an opponent. His weapon of choice is his black Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III, tuned to approximately 350 horsepower and equipped with an anti-lag misfiring system that produces a distinctive popping sound and provides immediate throttle response. Key relationships include his rivalry with Ryosuke Takahashi, his mentorship and leadership over the impulsive Seiji Iwaki, and his role as a significant rival who forces Takumi to confront the limitations of his car and the need for further evolution as a driver.
