Description
Izo, a human ronin adrift in Japan's tumultuous shift from Shogunate to Meiji Restoration, fought as a soldier defending Shogun Yoshinobu Tokugawa at Edo Castle. There, he witnessed an elf halt a battle using a magic wand, an event seared into his memory. The old regime's collapse brought personal tragedy: betrayal by his former superior, Kōketsu, cost him his right eye and shattered his spirit, leaving him emotionally numb and merely existing on borrowed time.
He found grim employment as a guard at a Kyoto brothel. Duties included confining the disruptive elf girl, Sonya. He developed a respectful rapport with Chihaya, a high-ranking courtesan later revealed to be an amnesiac elf, occasionally performing small services like delivering an English vocabulary book. His apathetic existence persisted until Kōketsu's forces attacked the brothel, seeking Sonya and her wand. Chihaya died protecting Sonya, using her hairpin—exposed as a wand—and tasked Sonya with returning it to the elven homeland of Hakodate.
Izo escaped the inferno with Sonya, encountering Raiden, an orc once serving Kōketsu. Though initially distrustful and hostile, Izo was forced into cooperation when Sonya, wielding the wand, hired both as escorts to Hakodate. He demonstrated lingering duty by creating a makeshift grave for Chihaya and explaining the ritual to Sonya. His weathered features bear facial hair, a scar over his missing right eye, and the marks of a harsh life.
Protecting Sonya and delivering the wand, Izo displayed deadly swordsmanship, especially retrieving his old katana to fight attackers during the brothel assault. Combat sometimes triggered intense rage fueled by memories of Kōketsu's betrayal, manifesting as a black aura Sonya observed. Despite initial reluctance and emotional reserve, he gradually formed a protective bond with Sonya and a grudging respect for Raiden. Their shared mission along the Tokaido road, pursued by Kōketsu and the Inferni, forced him to confront his past and re-engage with life beyond survival. Sonya perceived a light blue aura emanating from him, hinting at underlying nobility beneath his stoic exterior.
