Description
Hiroki Sugimura is a fictional character from the story of Battle Royale. He is a fifteenth-year-old student in the third-year class B of Shiroiwa Junior High School, designated as Boy Number 11. Before the events of the Program, Hiroki is established as a tall, introspective, and fundamentally kind individual. His childhood was marked by bullying from older children, during which he would passively endure the abuse without fighting back. This behavior was a source of confusion for his best friend, Takako Chigusa, who could not understand his passivity. In an effort to prove his own strength to himself, Hiroki began studying martial arts. In the novel, his discipline is noted as kenpo, while in the manga adaptation, he practices kung fu. Despite achieving a high level of skill, he never enjoyed using his abilities for violence and held a personal principle against striking an unarmed or surprised opponent from behind.

His personality is a blend of quiet reserve and profound sensitivity. He is a respected and popular member of his class, counting Shuya Nanahara and Shinji Mimura among his close friends, yet he remains somewhat introverted. A significant defining trait is his long-standing romantic affection for a quiet classmate named Kayoko Kotohiki, who is largely unaware of his feelings. In the manga, his interest in her is sparked by observing her practice ikebana, or flower arranging, in a studio beneath his martial arts dojo. His gentle nature is further illustrated in a flashback where he attempts to care for an abandoned kitten, a moment that allows Kayoko to see past his intimidating martial artist exterior. Outside of his martial arts training, his interests include playing sports such as basketball and baseball, as well as reading Chinese poetry.

When his class is forced into the Battle Royale, Hiroki is given a GPS tracking device as his only issued item, making him one of the few students without a conventional weapon. Despite this initial disadvantage, his martial arts training allows him to improvise a bō staff from a mop or broom handle, which he uses effectively throughout the game. He later acquires a Colt M1911 pistol after a confrontation with the volatile Mitsuko Souma. His primary motivation throughout the deadly program is not to kill but to locate the two people most important to him: his best friend, Takako Chigusa, and the object of his affection, Kayoko Kotohiki.

His role in the story is that of a moral anchor and a powerful but reluctant fighter. He represents a force of protection and hope, refusing to succumb to the paranoia and violence that consumes many of his classmates. He spends the majority of his time traversing the island alone, using his GPS to avoid dangerous areas and search for the two girls. His most significant relationships are with Takako Chigusa and Kayoko Kotohiki. When he finally finds Takako, she is mortally wounded and dies in his arms after confessing her love for him, a feeling he cannot reciprocate as his heart belongs to another. This encounter profoundly affects him but does not deter his search for Kayoko. He reunites briefly with Shuya Nanahara and his allies, learning of a potential escape plan, but he chooses to continue his solitary search, promising to rejoin them once he has found Kayoko.

Hiroki demonstrates notable abilities that set him apart from many other participants. His martial arts prowess is exceptional, allowing him to engage in hand-to-hand combat with some of the most dangerous students, including the psychopathic Kazuo Kiriyama. He is shown to be a formidable combatant, capable of disarming opponents and holding his own in extended fights despite being unarmed or severely injured. His skill is matched by a strong moral code; he consistently tries to avoid lethal force and even gives dangerous individuals like Mitsuko Souma a chance to reconsider her actions.

Throughout the narrative, his character develops from a passive, somewhat melancholic youth into a determined and active protector. His primary development centers on his unwavering dedication to his principles and his love for Kayoko, which ultimately leads to his tragic end. In all versions of the story, he eventually finds Kayoko, but their reunion is steeped in tragedy. In the novel and film, a terrified and paranoid Kayoko, mistaking him for a threat, shoots him. In his final moments, he finally confesses his love to her and urges her to find safety before he dies. In the manga, their reunion is cut short by a final, brutal confrontation with Kazuo Kiriyama, during which Hiroki fights to his last breath to protect the girl he loves. In every adaptation, his death is a poignant and sorrowful end to a character defined by his quiet strength, loyalty, and unfulfilled love.
