Description
Makoto Kowata is a fifteen-year-old apprentice witch who stands 160 centimeters tall and has a birthday of February 22. She originally lived in Yokohama but moves to the rural region of Aomori in northern Japan to live with her second cousins, Kei and Chinatsu Kuramoto, on their farm. In witch tradition, turning fifteen marks the age of independence, when young witches are expected to leave home to train on their own. However, Makoto's parents wanted her to finish high school, so she attends a local school while living with her relatives instead of fully striking out on her own. She brings along her black cat familiar, Chito, who accompanies her throughout her daily life.
Makoto has a friendly, easygoing, and calm personality. She is polite and kind-hearted in her interactions with others, but she also has a tendency to be absent-minded and can be noticeably airheaded at times. One of her most consistent quirks is a poor sense of direction, which causes her to get lost easily, though she gradually becomes more accustomed to her new surroundings over time. She is also somewhat passive and operates at her own pace, which can occasionally confuse or amuse the people around her. She keeps a diary where she records her daily experiences, and she enjoys making sweets.
Her primary motivation is to complete her training as a witch and become fully independent. Rather than pursuing grand magical ambitions, she focuses on adapting to life in the countryside, learning to use her abilities more reliably, and discovering the charm in small, everyday experiences. Her approach to magic is practical and quiet; she is more inclined toward preparing potions and creating objects than casting flashy or dramatic spells. Makoto's magical attribute is Darkness, which grants her a particular talent for creation magic. This allows her to craft things such as witch robes and even develop new spells. She can cast common spells and fly on a broomstick, though she is not especially skilled at flying and improves only with time and practice.
In the story, Makoto serves as the central protagonist who introduces both her relatives and new friends to the wonders and oddities of the magical world. Her older sister Akane is a more accomplished witch who occasionally visits and provides training, helping Makoto gain confidence and control over her powers. Initially, Makoto struggles to use her magic effectively, but after Akane's guidance, she becomes more comfortable and successful with her abilities. She shares a close and supportive bond with her cousin Kei, who is calm and understanding, and with her younger cousin Chinatsu, who begins the story wary of Makoto but quickly becomes fascinated with magic after being taken for a ride on a broomstick. Makoto also befriends Nao, Kei's classmate, who helps her find her way around town and is gradually introduced to the unusual aspects of witchcraft. Over the course of the series, Makoto grows more assured in her magical skills, eventually crafting a witch robe for Chinatsu, participating in local festivals, and continuing her training with a quiet sense of purpose and contentment.
