Description
Connie Springer is a native of Ragako Village, located in the southern territory of Wall Rose. He enlisted in the military with the initial goal of joining the Military Police Brigade, hoping to bring honor to his family and his village. He graduated from the 104th Training Corps ranked eighth in his class, a position he achieved through high physical ability and excellent balance, which made him adept with the vertical maneuvering equipment, despite his poor academic results and slow comprehension.

In his early days as a trainee, Connie is outgoing, impetuous, and somewhat unfocused, often goofing around with his friends and boasting about his natural talents. He is known to be slow on the uptake, frequently misunderstanding strategies and lacking sharp judgment, a trait that sometimes frustrates him, especially as the horrors of war mount. Despite this naivety, he is deeply sociable, values camaraderie highly, and is consistently eager to prove his worth and protect those close to him. His optimistic and cheerful nature serves as a bright spot within the group, though this is severely tested as the story progresses.

Connie’s motivations are heavily rooted in personal loyalty and the pain of his past. His village was destroyed when the Beast Titan transformed all of its inhabitants into Pure Titans. In his own home, Connie discovered an immobile Titan that spoke the words "welcome home" and, upon investigation, realized this creature was actually his mother. This traumatic event becomes a core driver for him, leading to a vow for vengeance and a deep-seated desperation to find a way to restore her. Unlike those driven by grand ideology, Connie's actions are often motivated by the desire to protect his remaining friends, particularly after the death of Sasha Blouse, whom he considered like a twin.

Throughout the narrative, Connie’s role evolves from a well-meaning but error-prone recruit into a battle-hardened soldier within the Survey Corps. He is a member of the new Levi Squad and participates in many critical operations, including the Battle of Trost District, the clash with the Female Titan in the Giant Forest, the expedition to reclaim Shiganshina, and the raid on Liberio. In the final arc, as the global alliance forms to stop Eren Yeager's Rumbling, Connie faces his most severe moral crisis. Consumed by grief and the desperate hope of saving his mother, he attempts to feed the young warrior Falco Grice to her Titan form, abandoning his principles and abusing a child's trust. He is only stopped by Armin Arlert’s willingness to sacrifice himself, which brings Connie back to his senses, realizing that his mother would have been horrified by his actions. He then rejoins the alliance and fights in the final battle at the Founding Titan.

Key relationships define Connie's journey. His bond with Sasha Blouse is especially close, characterized by mutual mischief and deep care; her death devastates him and nearly drives him to commit unforgivable acts. He shares a brotherly dynamic with Eren Yeager, though they clash due to Eren’s tendency to prioritize goals over immediate comrades. He strongly relies on Jean Kirschtein and Armin Arlert, with Jean's speech ironically being the reason Connie ultimately joins the Survey Corps. Despite Reiner Braun saving his life at Utgard Castle, Connie feels profound betrayal upon learning Reiner's true identity as the Armored Titan.

As a soldier, Connie’s abilities are notable for an ordinary human without any Titan powers or Ackerman lineage. His primary strengths are his agility, flexibility, and exceptional proficiency with the vertical maneuvering equipment, allowing him to perform sharp turns and with high speed. He grows significantly over the course of the story, both in height and in combat effectiveness. In the final battle, he demonstrates remarkable skill by avoiding projectiles from the Beast Titan and surviving against other Titan shifters, proving his resilience and competence as a soldier.

Connie’s personal growth is marked by a gradual loss of his initial innocence as he endures repeated tragedies, betrayals, and the grim reality of the world. He evolves from a clumsy, joking boy into a soldier capable of deep anger, sorrow, and difficult decisions. His lowest point, involving the attempted sacrifice of Falco, serves as a crucial turning point, forcing him to reckon with his desperation. Ultimately, he rehabilitates himself, choosing to fight for the greater good to make his mother proud. After the Rumbling is stopped and the power of the Titans vanishes, his mother is finally restored to human form.
