Description
Daguza Mackle is a 38-year-old male officer in the Earth Federation Forces, holding the rank of Commander (Lieutenant Colonel). He serves as the commanding officer of the ECOAS 920 special forces team, a unit also known by the grim nickname the Manhunters, tasked with hunting down remnants of the Neo Zeon movement.
As a veteran soldier, Daguza is defined by a powerful sense of duty and a pragmatic, mission-focused mindset. He refers to himself and his soldiers as cogs in the machine of the Earth Federation, emphasizing the importance of each part functioning without question for the whole to operate. He is decisive and willing to employ ruthless or underhanded tactics, such as taking a hostage to negotiate with an enemy, demonstrating a strong belief that soldiers must accomplish their objectives regardless of the moral complexities. However, despite this hardened exterior, Daguza is not a cold-blooded killer. He retains a deep sense of humanity and personal honor, particularly regarding the welfare of children and civilians, a sensitivity likely born from past tragedies. One such incident, alluded to from his past, involved an operation where a building he was ordered to destroy contained a group of children, leaving him haunted by the memory. This personal history makes him especially protective of young people caught in the crossfire of war, and he shows considerable remorse for involving a civilian boy in military conflicts.
Daguza’s primary motivation is the successful completion of his mission: to prevent the opening of Laplace's Box, a secret that holds the potential to overthrow the Earth Federation government. He leads his unit in operations to secure the Unicorn Gundam, which is the key to the Box, and to capture or eliminate those who seek it. In the story, his role evolves from that of a strict military commander to a crucial mentor and protector for the protagonist, Banagher Links. Initially, Daguza views Banagher as a civilian who has hijacked military property, but he quickly recognizes the young pilot’s importance and potential. After Banagher is captured by the Neo Zeon faction known as the Sleeves, Daguza insists that the subsequent Federation assault on their asteroid fortress, Palau, be framed as a hostage rescue operation, arguing that they owe a debt to the boy who risked his life to save their ship.
His relationship with Banagher is the most significant of the series. Daguza takes on a paternal role, offering guidance and sharing his own hardened worldview to help Banagher understand the gravity of his situation. In a moment of reflection, he admits to himself that if he had a son, he would feel the same way about him as he does about Banagher. Daguza also works closely with his second-in-command, Conroy Haagensen, who later assumes leadership of the ECOAS team after Daguza’s death. He maintains a tense and often adversarial relationship with Alberto Vist, an Anaheim Electronics representative whose corporate loyalties and compromised methods clash with Daguza's straightforward military discipline.
Throughout the narrative, Daguza develops from a formidable but impersonal authority figure into a man who acts on his own conscience. While he sees himself as a cog, he ultimately listens to his heart, realizing that even cogs can have hope for the future. His development culminates in his final act of sacrifice. As he and Banagher investigate the ruins of the Laplace colony, they are confronted by the powerful mobile suit Sinanju, piloted by Full Frontal. Knowing the odds are insurmountable, Daguza exits the Unicorn Gundam’s cockpit. Using a bazooka and pre-set explosives, he creates a diversion, damaging the Sinanju and giving Banagher a critical chance to fight back. As he makes his final salute to the young pilot, Daguza is vaporized by the enemy mobile suit’s beam saber. His death serves as the catalyst that unlocks Banagher’s full potential and resolve.
Daguza’s notable abilities are those of a highly trained special operations leader. He is a skilled pilot of the D-50C Loto, a transformable mobile suit designed for infiltration and ground combat. He demonstrates exceptional tactical cunning and bravery, utilizing anti-MS booby traps, flares, and a bazooka to temporarily disable a far superior mobile suit, showcasing his ability to fight effectively even without a mobile suit of his own. His true strength lies in his leadership, strategic mind, and the ability to make split-second, life-altering decisions in the field.
