Description
Makoto Tachibana is a main character in the film High Speed! Free! Starting Days, which follows his junior high school years alongside his childhood friend Haruka Nanase. He is a backstroke swimmer with a tall, athletic build, and he possesses a special talent for that stroke. Born on November 17, he stands 183 centimeters tall and weighs 73 kilograms.

His background is rooted in a close-knit family: he is the eldest child and cares deeply for his younger twin siblings, Ran and Ren, often taking on a protective and responsible role at home. His childhood was marked by a traumatic incident during a typhoon, when a ship crew including an old fisherman friend drowned near the harbor. This event instilled in him a lasting fear of the ocean, a fear that he must confront as he continues his swimming career.

Personality-wise, Makoto is kind, considerate, and very gentle, typically wearing a calm smile. He is extremely sensitive and easily frightened—a trait that makes him hide behind Haruka when scared. Despite his large frame, he is weak-hearted and timid, but he balances this with a strong sense of responsibility and a natural inclination to support others. He often serves as Haruka’s emotional anchor and unofficial spokesperson, understanding Haruka’s strengths and interpreting his thoughts for those around him. He is also one of the more sensible people in his group, sometimes growing weary of his friends’ eccentric antics.

His motivations center on supporting his friends, especially Haruka, while also overcoming his own insecurities and fears. He dreams of becoming a swimming teacher. In High Speed! Free! Starting Days, a key part of his development involves questioning whether he truly enjoys swimming for himself or is only in the club to be with Haruka. This doubt, prompted by vice captain Nao Serizawa, creates a temporary rift between him and Haruka. Through the challenges of forming a cohesive medley relay team with Asahi Shiina and Ikuya Kirishima, Makoto ultimately realizes that he loves both swimming and Haruka equally, reaffirming their bond. He learns to become more assertive and express his own aspirations.

Makoto’s role in the story is that of a loyal friend and the emotional core of the group. He is the glue that holds the team together, often mediating conflicts and offering steady leadership. His relationships are central: his inseparable bond with Haruka Nanase, forged since before kindergarten, defines much of his character arc. He also builds strong friendships with other teammates such as Nagisa Hazuki, Rei Ryugazaki, and eventually Rin Matsuoka, though Rin’s presence adds competitive tension. He is protective and nurturing toward younger swimmers, embodying a big-brother figure both at home and on the team.

His notable abilities include excellent backstroke technique, powered by his height and strength. However, his fear of the ocean can be a limitation during outdoor races or training. Over the course of the narrative, he confronts that fear to support his team, demonstrating courage and growth. He is also a perceptive and empathetic listener, able to anticipate the needs of those around him. By the end of the film, he has gained greater self-confidence and a clearer sense of his own identity as a swimmer and as a friend.
