Description
Kyosuke Kuga is a third-year student at Honan Academy and a main character in the story. He is seventeen years old with a tall, lean build, standing at 186 centimeters tall. His most distinctive physical features are his long white hair, which he ties into a high ponytail during Stride races, and his sharp grey eyes.
Known throughout the school as a feared delinquent, Kyosuke has a reputation that makes him appear intimidating and mysterious. He is mostly a loner, but beneath his aloof exterior lies a fundamentally kind individual. His personality is calm and collected, and he is known for his thoughtful, almost poetic observations about the sport, often speaking about the feeling of the "wind" while running. This contrast between his feared reputation and his actual considerate nature defines much of his social standing at Honan Academy.
Kyosuke is one of the original members of the Honan Stride Club. His history with the team is complicated by a past incident known as the KGB incident. During his first year, a dispute arose with upperclassmen following a loss. In the ensuing conflict, Kyosuke was involved in an altercation where a relationer struck his teammate Heath Hasekura on the foot, causing a lasting injury. Taking responsibility for the discord that followed, Kyosuke left the Stride Club and distanced himself from the sport entirely.
His role in the story is set in motion when the current Stride Club faces a crisis due to an injury to a key runner, Ayumu. Recognizing that Kyosuke's skills far surpass those of the existing team members, the club makes efforts to recruit him back. He is persuaded to rejoin the team by Nana Sakurai, a new member who refuses to give up on convincing him. His return forces him to confront his unresolved conflicts with his former teammates, particularly Heath Hasekura and relationer Tomoe Yagami. His initial re-entry is met with resistance from Hozumi, who struggles to accept his presence, but these resentments are eventually resolved through the shared intensity of competition. A key relationship is also his long-standing friendship with a fellow student from middle school, though he deliberately maintains a certain distance from them to avoid trouble.
Throughout the narrative, Kyosuke demonstrates notable personal growth as he learns to trust his new teammates and forgive himself for the past. His journey is one of reconciliation, as he settles his differences with Heath and Tomoe to become a cohesive part of the team once more.
In terms of ability, Kyosuke is an exceptionally talented runner whose Stride skills are acknowledged to be far superior to those of his peers, including Heath and the elite runners of rival teams like Saisei. His natural athleticism and running form command the respect of other athletes, with members of the opposing team Saisei looking up to him immensely. His renown is such that the character Nana Sakurai was originally inspired to transfer to Honan Academy after witnessing a video of his powerful Stride performance. Outside of the sport, he possesses a motorcycle license, which he uses for personal transportation.
