Description
Kennosuke Tokisada Ouma is a young man originally from the Sengoku period, also known as the Warring States period of Japan, who awakens in the 21st century after being in suspended animation for approximately 450 years. He is a samurai and a retainer of the Washiba clan, having served its princess, Yukihime. His age is biologically seventeen, and he possesses a number of physical characteristics that hint at his warrior background, including black hair, red eyes, and a body covered in scars from past battles.

His personality is defined by an unwavering loyalty, a strong sense of duty, and a blunt, honest nature. As a samurai from a bygone era, he is initially bewildered by modern technology and customs, making him a classic fish out of temporal water. Despite his confusion, he adapts to his new surroundings with the help of those around him, though he retains his formal and polite manner of speaking unless provoked, at which point he can reveal a short-tempered and passionate side. His entire worldview is shaped by the codes of honor and service he learned as a warrior, leading him to view the alien invaders he once fought as oni, or demons.

Kennosuke’s primary motivation is to fulfill his duty to protect Yukihime, the princess he served in the past. After mistaking the modern girl Yukina Shirahane for his princess upon awakening, this sense of duty transfers and evolves, becoming a deep commitment to protecting her and the world from the returning alien threat known as the Efi Dorg. As a man displaced in time, he struggles with having little left to live for in this new era, and his mission to fight the demons becomes his sole purpose for a time, as he seeks to honor his past and find a place in the present.

In the story, his role is that of the protagonist and the sole compatible pilot of a powerful humanoid war machine known as the Black Relic or Kuromukuro. This mecha, which he originally stole from the Efi Dorg, is the most effective weapon against the alien forces. Due to an accident, he becomes biometrically synchronized with Yukina Shirahane, the daughter of the United Nations Kurobe Laboratory director, who must act as his navigator. This makes them inseparable combat partners and central to the defense efforts of the UN laboratory. He eventually becomes a key ally to the institute, lending his unique abilities and experience to the fight against the invasion.

Kennosuke’s most significant relationship is with Yukina Shirahane, who is the spitting image of his former master, Princess Yukihime. This resemblance causes him much initial confusion, but as they fight together, a strong bond of trust and mutual respect develops between them. He also forms a surrogate family with Yukina's mother and sister, who provide him with support and a home as he navigates the modern world. His relationships with other characters, such as the samurai-enthusiast Sophie Noël, highlight the cultural and historical gaps he embodies, as he does not always live up to the idealized bushido values expected by modern otaku. He is also connected to the Efi Dorg pilot Muetta, who is a clone of Yukihime, further complicating his feelings and sense of duty.

Throughout the series, Kennosuke undergoes significant development as he adjusts to life in a peaceful era. He begins as a warrior with no purpose other than battle, but through his interactions with Yukina and modern society, he begins to consider a future beyond fighting. His worldview, once strictly feudal, expands as he learns to cooperate with a global, technologically advanced military organization. A key part of his growth is moving from seeing Yukina simply as a replacement for his princess to recognizing her as an individual and a partner in her own right. His initial stated goal of simply rejoining his princess in death evolves into a more complex desire to live and protect his new world.

Kennosuke possesses notable abilities that make him an exceptional warrior. He is a master of swordsmanship, with implausible fencing skills that allow him to fight effectively even against giant mecha. As a seasoned veteran of the Sengoku period, he has a natural aptitude for combat and leadership in battle. His primary ability in the series is piloting the Black Relic, which he is uniquely attuned to. Additionally, his body has been enhanced by the technology of the mecha; pledging himself to the Black Relic involves nanomachines that grant him a regenerative healing factor, making him functionally ageless. He is also known for his culinary skills, being a supreme chef particularly renowned for his curry.
