TV-Series
Description
Catherine Royal is a pivotal character in Space Adventure Cobra, known for her complex role as one of three triplet sisters destined to decide the fate of the lost planet Myrus. She is a survivor of Myrus, an ancient civilization that was destroyed when its polluted atmosphere became hostile. Along with her sisters, Jane and Dominique, Catherine is a candidate to become the new queen of a reborn Myrus, a process governed by the supercomputer Professor Toporo.

Personality and Motivations

Catherine is initially presented as being under the control of the antagonist Crystal Boy, which dictates her actions throughout much of the story. Unlike her sister Jane, who is characterized as a beautiful and charismatic bounty hunter that Cobra falls in love with, Catherine begins her narrative arc as a pawn, forced to serve the plans of the Guild. Her motivations are not self-driven at first; she is a captive tool meant to be used as the star queen to open the gate on the artificial planet Myrus. However, her underlying fate is tied to the prophecy of Myrus, which states that the sisters can become the one true queen either by being the last surviving triplet or by all three falling in love with the same man.

Role in the Story and Key Relationships

Catherine’s primary role in the narrative is as the sister under the sway of Crystal Boy, which creates the central conflict that Cobra must resolve. After Cobra is defeated and cryogenically frozen by Crystal Boy, Catherine is ordered to reunite with her sister Jane. She betrays and kills Jane, an act that tragically triggers the prophecy of Myrus. In her dying moments, Jane transmits her love for Cobra to him, which revives him and allows him to escape. This event leaves Catherine in possession of her sister’s love, eventually transferring her allegiance to Cobra as well. Her relationship with Cobra is therefore indirect and tragic; she is brought into his orbit through the death of Jane, with the narrative suggesting that she will then love Cobra as her sister did. Her other key relationship is with her surviving sister, Dominique, whom Crystal Boy orders Catherine to eliminate to fulfill his plan of ruling Myrus alone.

Development and Notable Abilities

Catherine undergoes a significant transformation from a villainous puppet to a figure of redemption. After initially serving Crystal Boy and committing the murder of her own sister, she is ultimately freed from his control. In a final act of defiance and sacrifice, she atones for her actions. Rather than ascending as queen, she sinks her own body into the mechanism of Myrus, sacrificing her life to restore and revive the dead planet. This act completes the arc of the Myrus triplets, allowing the civilization to be reborn. She does not possess notable combat abilities or unique powers like Cobra’s Psycho-Gun; her significance is entirely tied to her prophesied bloodline as part of the Myrus star queen.
