Description
Gotenks is the fictional character created from the fusion of Son Goten and Trunks, two young half-Saiyan warriors, using the Metamoran Fusion Dance technique. This combination was first conceptualized during the battle against Majin Buu, and the character continues to appear in Dragon Ball Super as a powerful, if unreliable, asset to the Earth's defenders.

In terms of background, Gotenks is the direct result of a specific training regimen. Facing the seemingly unstoppable Majin Buu, Goku realized his time on Earth was limited and chose to prepare the next generation. He taught the fusion technique to Goten and Trunks, leaving the stern Namekian warrior Piccolo to oversee their intense practice in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. The fusion process is difficult and requires perfect synchronization; when Goten and Trunks make mistakes, the resulting fusion produces comical failures, such as an obese, slow-moving version or an emaciated, frail one. Only when they perform the dance correctly does the powerful and confident Gotenks emerge.

Personality is perhaps Gotenks's most defining trait. The fusion process seems to amplify the most prominent—and often least desirable—characteristics of the two boys, particularly their shared arrogance and immaturity. Gotenks is overwhelmingly proud, often to the point of self-sabotage. He views combat not as a serious responsibility but as a grand stage for his performance, frequently prioritizing flashy, cool-looking techniques over practical ones. This overconfidence is his primary weakness; he is easily distracted by his own perceived brilliance and has a tendency to toy with opponents rather than finish them efficiently. This reckless attitude often frustrates his mentor, Piccolo, who attempts to instill a more strategic approach to battle. Despite these flaws, Gotenks possesses a genuine, if childish, sense of heroism and a remarkable, almost instinctive, talent for fighting.

Motivations for Gotenks are rarely complex. He is primarily driven by a desire for recognition and the thrill of demonstrating his immense power. He seeks to prove himself the strongest warrior and often boasts about defeating enemies with little effort. This stems from the natural pride of his components—the competitive Saiyan spirit inherited from Trunks's father, Vegeta, combined with Goten's innate, playful battle genius inherited from Goku. He wants to be seen as a hero, but he also wants the process to be entertaining.

Within the story, Gotenks's role is that of a wildcard with exceptional potential. He was conceived as the last hope against Majin Buu when the adult Z-Fighters had been defeated. His battle against Buu in the original series demonstrated both his incredible power—achieving the formidable Super Saiyan 3 transformation at a remarkably young age—and his critical immaturity, as his games ultimately allowed Buu to gain the upper hand. In Dragon Ball Super, this role is diminished but similar. As the threats become cosmic in scale, involving gods and multiversal tournaments, Gotenks is often sidelined or proves inadequate. For instance, during the conflict with Beerus, the God of Destruction, he confidently attacks but is swatted away with minimal effort. In the film Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, a teenage Goten and Trunks attempt the fusion again. However, due to being out of practice, they fail to perform the dance correctly, producing an overweight and underpowered Gotenks who, despite his weakness, still manages to land a single, crucial blow that helps weaken the giant foe Cell Max. This encapsulates his recurring narrative function: a reservoir of immense, untapped power that is perpetually undermined by the user's lack of discipline and experience.

Key relationships heavily define Gotenks. His most direct relationship is with Piccolo, who serves as his reluctant, often exasperated, den master. Piccolo is the only one who can scold the fusion and attempt to force him to focus, making their dynamic a classic drill-sergeant-and-impulsive-recruit scenario. He is also defined by his relationship to his progenitor's families; he is the combined son of two of the universe's most powerful bloodlines, linking him to Goku, Vegeta, Chi-Chi, and Bulma, though he rarely interacts with them directly. His relationship with his adversaries is less about rivalry and more about proving a point. He sees enemies as unwitting co-stars in his own showcase.

Development for Gotenks across Dragon Ball Super has been limited and, in some ways, regressive. He begins as a prodigy who masters Super Saiyan 3 in days, a feat that took Goku years to achieve in the afterlife. In his early appearances, he was a serious threat to Majin Buu. However, by the time of Dragon Ball Super, the character has not matured at the same pace as the threats. While Goten and Trunks age into teenagers, their fused counterpart's power does not seem to have grown proportionally, and their skill at performing the fusion has even declined, as seen in their failed attempt in Super Hero. This lack of development suggests a narrative choice: the character's potential is real, but his childish nature is an insurmountable limit. He has not undergone significant character growth, remaining largely static as a reminder of the gap between natural talent and disciplined mastery.

Regarding notable abilities, Gotenks is renowned for his immense power level, speed, and a highly creative, if bizarre, arsenal of techniques. He is one of the few characters capable of attaining the Super Saiyan 3 transformation, which dramatically increases his strength, speed, and durability while giving him very long blonde hair and losing his eyebrows. His signature move is the Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack, wherein he spits out several small, sentient ghost-like copies of himself that giggle, fly toward the target, and explode on contact. Another common technique is the Galactic Donut, where he creates a ring of energy that can expand to encircle and trap an opponent before constricting and exploding. He is also known for a rapid-fire volley of energy blasts called the Continuous Die Die Missiles and possesses the ability to use a mouth-based energy wave as well as the iconic Kamehameha. Further demonstrating his eccentricity, he coined a series of named attacks like the "Ultra Missile Parfait" and "Plasma Shortcake," which are devastating energy attacks with dessert-themed names, a habit that underscores his playful and unorthodox fighting style.
