TV-Series
Description
Kale is a female Saiyan from the Sixth Universe planet Sadala, a twin universe to the one primarily featured in the series. Her name is derived from the vegetable kale. In her base state, she has a slender frame, black hair typically tied in a ponytail, and a distinctive bang that covers part of her left eye. She wears a red midriff-baring top, a red skirt with black shorts underneath, golden boots, and golden bracelets and hoop earrings.
Kale's personality stands in stark contrast to most other Saiyans, who are typically portrayed as aggressive and battle-hungry. She is normally depicted as extremely shy, timid, and lacking in self-confidence. She has a deeply emotional and dependent connection to her mentor and close companion, Caulifla, for whom she harbors intense feelings of admiration and, according to some interpretations, romantic love. This insecurity and fear of abandonment, particularly the thought of losing Caulifla's attention to others, serve as the primary catalysts for her actions and transformations.
Motivated by a desire to fight alongside Caulifla as an equal, Kale participates in the Tournament of Power as a representative of the Sixth Universe. Her primary internal conflict stems from her inability to control her immense latent power, which is directly linked to her emotional state. When her jealousy or rage is triggered, particularly when she perceives a threat to her bond with Caulifla, she transforms into a fearsome, berserk state. This form is visually distinct, characterized by a dramatic increase in muscle mass, a taller stature, and a greenish-yellow aura and hair, bearing a strong resemblance to the Seventh Universe's Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly. In this uncontrollable state, she loses her pupils and much of her rational thought, becoming a violent and indiscriminate threat to friend and foe alike. In the manga adaptation, this form's immense power is noted to eventually consume the user, leading to self-destruction. After a significant moment of encouragement from Caulifla, Kale learns to master this power, achieving a controlled version of the muscular form that allows her to retain her sanity and fight strategically alongside her partner.
Kale's most significant relationship is with Caulifla, the brash and gifted leader of a Saiyan group. Caulifla acts as her mentor and protector, and it is through her support that Kale finds the strength to control her abilities. Her dynamic with the male Saiyan Cabba is less central but often involves him trying to instruct her, which sometimes triggers her jealous outbursts. During the Tournament of Power, her role is that of a powerhouse whose uncontrolled rage causes chaos in the arena, eliminating several opponents before she is eventually subdued by the formidable Jiren from the Eleventh Universe. After gaining control, she becomes a formidable and cooperative fighter, teaming up with Caulifla to challenge the Seventh Universe's Goku. When pushed to their limits, the two Saiyans use the Potara earrings to fuse into a single, immensely powerful warrior named Kefla.
Throughout the Tournament of Power arc, Kale undergoes significant development. She begins as a frightened and insecure girl who is a liability to her team. Through her trials, particularly after being saved and encouraged by Caulifla, she learns to channel her emotions and harness her power without losing herself, evolving into a confident and capable fighter who earns the recognition of formidable opponents like Goku. Her journey culminates in the fusion with Caulifla, representing the peak of their combined strength and bond. Although the Sixth Universe is erased after their defeat, it is later restored by the victors of the tournament.
Kale possesses the standard abilities of a skilled fighter from the Dragon Ball universe, including flight using ki, high-speed movement, and the ability to fire various types of energy blasts, which take on a distinctive green color when she is transformed. Her most notable ability is her unique transformation into a legendary berserker state, which grants her immense strength and durability at the cost of her sanity. In her base form, she is also capable of achieving a standard but more powerful than average Super Saiyan transformation, with some sources classifying her controlled, empowered state as a unique variant of Super Saiyan 2. She has the ability to sense the energy of others and possesses the Saiyan trait of growing stronger from fighting and recovering from injuries.
