Description
Kensuke Aida is a 14-year-old student in class 2-A at Tokyo-3 Municipal First Middle School. Born in Yokohama on September 12, 2001, he is classmates with Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, Asuka Langley Soryu, and his two closest friends, Toji Suzuhara and Hikari Horaki. Like most of his classmates, Kensuke is an "Other Child," meaning he is a potential Evangelion pilot candidate kept within the same class for observation and protection. His mother is deceased, and his father works at a NERV base, a fact Kensuke occasionally exploits to obtain internal information by hacking into his father’s data files.

Kensuke is immediately identifiable by his brown, messy hair, freckles, and a pair of round red glasses. He has an energetic and self-assured demeanor, often appearing confident and outspoken. His most defining characteristic is his intense obsession with military equipment, tactics, and hardware, making him a classic military otaku. He is rarely seen without his personal camcorder, which he uses to record everything from Evangelion battles to candid moments of his classmates, sometimes selling the photos for profit. His hobbies include camping alone in the mountains surrounding Tokyo-3, where he engages in solo simulated war games and survival exercises.

In terms of personality, Kensuke is friendly, keen, and socially adept, often acting as a bridge between Shinji and others. He is communicative and can smooth over awkward situations, but he can also be intense, manipulative, and somewhat selfish. His overwhelming desire to pilot an Evangelion blinds him to the intense physical and psychological trauma that pilots like Shinji endure. He ceaselessly begs Shinji and Misato Katsuragi to recommend him as a pilot, genuinely believing it to be a glorious opportunity rather than a curse. Despite this naivety, he is a loyal friend who supports his peers and understands loneliness, as he is also motherless and lives apart from his father. Along with Toji, he has a noticeable crush on Misato and frequently teases Shinji for being oblivious to living with such an attractive woman.

Kensuke’s role in the story is primarily that of a supportive friend and a representation of a normal teenager's perspective on the extraordinary events of the series. He solidifies his friendship with Shinji during the battle against the Fourth Angel, Shamshel, when he and Toji are almost killed by the fighting but are saved by Shinji inside Unit-01. After this event, he becomes one of Shinji’s first genuine friends in Tokyo-3. He serves as a contrast to Shinji; where Shinji is reluctant and fearful of piloting, Kensuke is envious and desperate for the chance. His excitement provides a normalizing, if sometimes oblivious, counterpoint to the horrors of the pilot's life. For example, when he and Toji are invited aboard the naval vessel Over the Rainbow to meet Asuka, Kensuke spends his time filming the military aircraft and the ensuing battle with the Angel Gaghiel, treating the life-threatening event as a thrilling spectacle.

Key relationships define much of his screen time. He is best friends with Toji Suzuhara, and the two are frequently seen together, sometimes acting as a comedic duo. His relationship with Shinji is built on mutual respect and friendship, though it is tested by Kensuke’s persistent jealousy and requests to become a pilot. Despite his admiration for the Eva pilots, he does not get along well with Asuka, finding her personality difficult, though he acknowledges her good looks for his photography business. In the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, this dynamic evolves significantly in the final film, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, where an adult Kensuke has become a self-sufficient jack-of-all-trades in a post-Third Impact village. He serves as a supportive, almost fatherly figure to Asuka Shikinami, who lives in his home and calls him by the nickname Ken-Ken.

Kensuke experiences subtle development throughout the original series. Initially, he is a carefree military enthusiast who views piloting an Eva as a grand adventure. Over time, he witnesses the consequences of piloting, including Toji being chosen as the pilot of Unit-03 and subsequently being brutally injured. In Episode 19, after Shinji runs away, Kensuke leaves a phone message expressing his frustration, asking why Toji got a chance to shine as a pilot while he did not, revealing the depth of his unfulfilled longing and jealousy. As the series progresses and more classmates evacuate Tokyo-3, Kensuke becomes increasingly lonely, and it is implied that he too eventually leaves the city following the destruction caused by Unit-00’s explosion.

Regarding notable abilities, Kensuke possesses no superhuman or combat skills. His primary talents are his technical knowledge of military hardware and electronics. He is adept with his camcorder and has demonstrated the ability to hack into secure NERV data files through his father’s terminal. His outdoor survival skills are also highly developed, allowing him to camp alone in the wilderness for extended periods. In alternate continuities, such as the Rebuild films, these skills translate into practical community leadership and engineering, while in the video game Neon Genesis Evangelion: Battle Orchestra, he is depicted as the pilot of Unit-04, wearing a yellow plugsuit.
