Description
Maya Ibuki is a First Lieutenant and one of the three main computer technicians at NERV headquarters, serving directly under Dr. Ritsuko Akagi. Her primary responsibility during Angel attacks involves monitoring the Eva pilots’ synchronization ratios and relaying emergency commands from the command center. She also assists Ritsuko with the Magi supercomputers and various technical readouts.

Maya is an optimistic, cheerful, and caring young woman. She possesses a sensitive nature, often averting her eyes or becoming nauseated during the more violent Eva battles. This aversion to violence is most starkly shown when she refuses to take up a weapon against invading JSSDF soldiers, stating she cannot bring herself to kill another human being. She exhibits a faithful and trusting personality, genuinely admiring the technological achievements that rebuilt society after Second Impact, a cataclysm she experienced as a child. She expresses wonder at the scientific marvels of Tokyo-3, though her enthusiasm is occasionally dismissed by colleagues as idealistic. In quieter moments at NERV, she is seen reading romance novels and keeps a pink cat-shaped pillow at her station, along with a rabbit sticker on her laptop, reflecting a girlish side.

Her professional relationship with Ritsuko is central to her character. Maya refers to her as “sempai” and works closely with her, showing deep admiration that some interpret as romantic feelings. This is subtly suggested when, during the Instrumentality process in The End of Evangelion, she is guided by a vision of Ritsuko and responds with intense emotion. She is friendly and supportive toward the Eva pilots and expresses unease about dangerous technologies such as the Dummy Plug system. While she is privy to more information than some NERV personnel, she appears unaware of the organization’s ultimate goal of triggering Human Instrumentality, believing that defeating the Angels would end the mission. Maya’s notable abilities lie in her technical competence and her role as a calm, diligent support during critical operations, but her defining trait is her humanity, which makes her recoil from violence and trust in the redemptive potential of science and human connection.
