Description
The character Brolly, also known as the Legendary Super Saiyan, is a major antagonist from the Dragon Ball Z film series. His origin is rooted in tragedy and immense, uncontrollable power. Born with an extraordinarily high battle power of 10,000, he was viewed as a direct threat to the rule of King Vegeta, the monarch of the Saiyan race. Out of fear and jealousy, King Vegeta ordered the execution of the infant Brolly, who was stabbed and left for dead alongside his father, Paragus. They narrowly escaped the destruction of their home planet, Vegeta, when the tyrant Frieza obliterated it, with a young Brolly unconsciously using his power to create a protective barrier for himself and his father.
Brolly’s personality is defined by a stark and terrifying duality. In his normal state, he is a quiet, silent, and almost expressionless young man. He appears docile, speaks very little, and displays a surprisingly polite demeanor, as seen during his initial, calm introduction to Vegeta. However, this tranquility is a fragile facade. Brolly harbors a deep-seated, feral rage that is inextricably linked to Goku, known by his Saiyan name Kakarot. As infants, they were placed in adjacent nursery pods, and the constant crying of the low-power Kakarot is implied to have imprinted a subconscious trauma or annoyance on the prodigy Brolly. When exposed to Goku’s voice, presence, or power, this dormant rage erupts, causing him to lose control. In this state, he becomes a sadistic, bloodthirsty, and gleefully destructive warrior. He refers to his opponents as insects or dregs, toys with them to demonstrate his absolute superiority, and takes pleasure in their suffering. His famous, repeated shouting of Kakarot is the mantra of this berserker persona.
His primary motivation is not conquest or a desire for power in the traditional sense, but rather an instinctual, compulsive need to destroy. This destructive impulse is specifically triggered by Goku, who becomes the singular focus of his psychotic rage. Paragus, his father, seeks to exploit this immense power for revenge against the Saiyan royal family. He lures Vegeta, Goku, and the other Z-Fighters to a new planet under the false pretense of creating a new Saiyan empire. Paragus’s true goal is to use Brolly as an ultimate weapon to eliminate the remaining Saiyans, particularly Vegeta, the son of the king who wronged them. For Brolly himself, the battle is a personal, primal release of fury rather than a calculated scheme.
Brolly’s role in the story is that of an unstoppable, apocalyptic force. In his first appearance, he effortlessly dismantles the entire team of Z-Fighters, including Super Saiyan Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Future Trunks, and Piccolo, simultaneously. His power is so immense that it is felt from great distances, and attacks like a point-blank Kamehameha have no effect on him. He serves as a brutal reminder of the terrifying potential of the Saiyan race, a legend made real. His defeat does not come from a direct contest of strength, but from a concentrated effort where the remaining heroes donate their energy to Goku, allowing him to land a single, decisive punch that exploits the stab wound Brolly received as a baby.
The most significant relationship in Brolly’s life is with his father, Paragus. Paragus sees his son not as a person, but as a tool for vengeance. To control Brolly’s destructive temper, Paragus uses a mind-control device or a shock collar, which causes him immense pain and keeps him docile. This creates a deeply dysfunctional dynamic. While Paragus is terrified of his own son and treats him as a weapon, Brolly shows a flicker of subservience, but ultimately holds no true loyalty. In a pivotal moment, after breaking free from the mind-control device, Brolly kills his father without hesitation, demonstrating that his rage supersedes any filial bond. His other key relationship is with Goku, though it is entirely one-sided. Brolly is driven by a primal, unexplained hatred for him, making Goku the sole catalyst for his transformation into the Legendary Super Saiyan.
Throughout his appearances in the three Dragon Ball Z films, Brolly’s development is minimal, as he is primarily a force of nature. He survives his first defeat and crash-lands on Earth, where he is frozen in ice for seven years. The crying of Goku’s son, Goten, awakens him, and he continues his rampage, now even more mentally degraded. In this second film, he has lost nearly all his sanity and operates almost entirely on instinct, confusing Goten and Gohan for Goku. His final appearance is as a biological clone, Bio-Broly, created from a blood sample. This clone is a mindless, mutated monster, a far cry from the imposing warrior of the first film, and is ultimately destroyed by a combination of seawater and a Kamehameha wave, ending his threat.
Brolly’s notable abilities are centered on his unique Legendary Super Saiyan transformation. Unlike the standard golden-haired Super Saiyan form, Brolly’s version is distinct. His hair becomes a pale green or yellow-green, his irises disappear, and his muscle mass and height increase dramatically without sacrificing speed. This form grants him what seems to be an infinite well of power, making him a truly invincible force in battle. He possesses immense durability, able to withstand powerful energy attacks and even survive in lava. His fighting style is brutish and overpowering, using clotheslines, crushing grabs, and powerful strikes rather than intricate martial arts. His signature energy attacks are green in color and include a massive, expanding energy sphere of planetary destruction, as well as volleys of smaller, homing energy blasts. His power was officially stated to be around 1,400,000,000 during his first fight, surpassing all other warriors at the time, and he is often cited by the films' writers as the strongest antagonist of the Dragon Ball Z era.
