Description
Hildegarn is the primary antagonist of the Dragon Ball Z film Wrath of the Dragon. It is an enormous, ancient monster created thousands of years ago on the planet Konats. A group of dark magicians known as the Kashvar used a spell to bring the creature to life from a statue, intending for it to be an instrument of destruction and terror.

Hildegarn possesses no personality or speaking role; it is portrayed as a purely destructive force, a simple beast that rampages and destroys everything in its path without any motive other than chaos. Its entire purpose is to wreak havoc, and it does not display complex emotions or goals.

The monster's origin story explains its role in the narrative. After Hildegarn was unleashed and devastated Konats, two young warriors named Tapion and his brother Minoshia used magical ocarinas to freeze the creature. A priest then used a divine sword to cut Hildegarn in half. As the monster could not be fully killed, the upper half of its body was magically sealed inside Tapion, while the lower half was sealed inside Minoshia. The brothers were then placed into separate music box oracles and shot to opposite ends of the galaxy to prevent the halves from reuniting.

The story on Earth begins when a surviving magician named Hoi seeks to revive Hildegarn to rule the universe. Hoi locates the oracle containing Tapion on Earth and tricks the Dragon Team into opening it, releasing the warrior and the upper half of the monster within him. Hoi had previously found and killed Minoshia, releasing the lower half. Hoi orchestrates events to bring the two halves together, fully reconstituting the monster.

As a threat, Hildegarn is defined by its notable abilities. Its primary and most dangerous power is intangibility; its body behaves like a phantom, making it immune to physical attacks and energy blasts, which simply pass through it. It becomes solid and vulnerable only for the instant it launches an attack. It can move at high speed, breathe fire, and fire powerful energy waves. Hildegarn also has the ability to absorb the life energy from victims using threads from its tail. During the final battle, after being heavily damaged by the fused warrior Gotenks, Hildegarn sheds its outer shell and transforms into a more powerful, winged form that is even stronger and faster than before.

Key relationships define Hildegarn's role. It is the instrument of destruction for the magician Hoi, though Hoi shows no true control over it. Ultimately, the monster accidentally kills Hoi by crushing him underfoot. The monster shares a deep, mystical connection with the warrior Tapion, as Tapion's body is the vessel that contains its upper half. Tapion plays a specific melody on his ocarina to weaken Hildegarn and force it to retreat. Later, Tapion attempts to sacrifice himself by re-sealing the entire monster within his own body so that Trunks can kill them both with the divine sword.

Hildegarn does not undergo any character development, as it is a mindless beast. Its development is purely physical, demonstrated by its transformation into a more formidable creature. It serves as the final, overwhelming obstacle that forces the hero Goku to unleash his Dragon Fist attack as a Super Saiyan 3 to finally pierce through the monster and obliterate it, ending its rampage.
