Description
Arale Norimaki is a supporting character in Dragon Ball Movie 3: Mystical Adventure. She originates as the main protagonist of Akira Toriyama's earlier series, Dr. Slump, and makes a crossover appearance in this film. Arale is a humanoid robot, built by the eccentric inventor Senbei Norimaki in a place called Penguin Village. Despite being a machine, she has the appearance of a young girl with purple hair and is almost always seen wearing a pair of large, round glasses, which she requires due to being nearsighted. This is considered her only physical flaw.
In terms of personality, Arale is characterized by her extreme naivete, her boundless energy, and a complete lack of common sense. She approaches the world with an innocent and playful curiosity, often failing to understand normal social conventions or the potential danger of a situation. She is also notably pure of heart, a trait that allows her to ride the Kinto'un, or Flying Nimbus cloud, a vehicle that only those without any evil can use. Her motivations are generally simple, revolving around having fun, helping her friends, and acting on her immediate impulses, which often leads to chaotic but humorous results.
In Dragon Ball Movie 3: Mystical Adventure, Arale's role is a direct extension of her original character. She lives in Penguin Village, which the main antagonist, General Tao, travels to while pursuing Goku. The film adapts and re-contextualizes a meeting from the original Dragon Ball manga, replacing General Blue with the assassin General Tao. When General Tao arrives in Penguin Village, he encounters Arale. Demonstrating her incredible, comedic strength, Arale easily overpowers and defeats General Tao, a fighter who had proven to be a lethal threat to Goku. Her key relationship in the movie is with Goku, whom she aids by defeating his enemy, though their interaction is brief and primarily focuses on her showcasing her absurd power.
While the film does not provide any significant development for Arale, as she is a guest character, her presence serves to highlight the contrast between the relatively serious martial arts world of Dragon Ball and the gag-manga reality of Dr. Slump. Her most notable abilities include superhuman strength that far exceeds normal limits, allowing her to perform feats like splitting the earth with a karate chop, a move known as the Chikyūwari, or firing a powerful energy beam from her mouth called the N'chahō. She is also incredibly fast and durable. Her capabilities are defined by the logic of a gag manga, meaning she often performs impossible actions without consequence, treating serious battles as simple games.
