Description
In Dragon Ball Movie 4: The Path to Power, the character known as Black is more formally referred to as Staff Officer Black. He serves as the second-in-command of the Red Ribbon Army, holding a position directly beneath the organization’s leader, Commander Red. The film presents a reimagining of the original Dragon Ball story, and within this narrative, Black is elevated to the role of the primary physical antagonist, acting as the formidable final obstacle that the hero, Goku, must overcome.

In terms of personality, Staff Officer Black is portrayed as a cunning, ambitious, and ruthlessly efficient military officer. He displays a cold and calculating demeanor, carrying out his duties with a sense of professional pride and a noticeable lack of the cartoonish incompetence that often plagues his subordinates. He is shown to be entirely loyal to the Red Ribbon Army's mission of world domination, but this loyalty is ultimately conditional. Beneath his disciplined exterior lies a deep-seated ambition and a fierce temper. When he discovers that Commander Red’s true wish for the Dragon Balls is not for world conquest but simply to increase his own height, Black’s respect shatters, replaced by utter contempt for his leader’s pettiness. This revelation triggers a violent betrayal, showcasing his pragmatic and power-hungry nature; he believes the army’s resources should be used for a goal far grander than a personal vanity project.

Black’s primary motivation throughout the film is to secure the seven Dragon Balls for the Red Ribbon Army. While he initially seeks them to further the organization’s goal of world domination, his personal motivation shifts after eliminating Commander Red. He then seeks to claim the Dragon Balls for himself, intending to use the wish for a purpose he deems more fitting for a military empire, though his specific desire is left to inference as his plans are cut short. His role in the story is that of the central villain in the film’s final act. After Goku and his friends successfully infiltrate the Red Ribbon headquarters and defeat many of the army’s top personnel, Black steps in. He first disposes of the now-useless Commander Red and then takes command of a massive, powerful mecha known as the Battle Jacket, which he had apparently been developing in secret.

Key relationships define his actions and downfall. His relationship with Commander Red is one of subservience that curdles into murderous resentment. He serves Red faithfully until he perceives his leader as weak and foolish, at which point he kills him without hesitation. His primary antagonistic relationship is with Goku and Android 8. Black views Goku as a significant threat, but he shows particular disdain for Android 8, whom he considers a failed, defective creation of the army. In their final confrontation, Black’s Battle Jacket proves powerful enough to overwhelm Goku, knocking the young Saiyan unconscious. He then callously kills Android 8 when the android attempts to protect his friend, mocking him even in death. This act of cruelty proves to be his undoing, as it sends Goku into a rage-fueled state of vengeance.

The character undergoes a clear but brief development from a disciplined officer to a treacherous usurper and finally to a laughing madman. His composure completely cracks after he seizes power. He becomes arrogant and overconfident in the Battle Jacket’s power, believing himself invincible. When Goku retaliates with a devastating Kamehameha wave, Black experiences a villainous breakdown, descending into hysterical, panicked laughter as his mecha is destroyed around him.

Staff Officer Black’s most notable ability is his prowess as a pilot of the Battle Jacket. This large, robotic suit of armor grants him immense strength, flight capability, and powerful weaponry, making him a physical match for Goku at that point in the story. Outside of the mecha, he is a capable military leader and a skilled marksman, as demonstrated when he personally executes Commander Red. His cunning and ability to plan, evidenced by the secret development of the Battle Jacket, are also key assets that distinguish him from the more bumbling officers in the Red Ribbon Army.
