Description
Ken Masters is an American martial artist who hails from a life of wealth and privilege as the son of a powerful hotel tycoon. Concerned that his son would become spoiled without proper direction, Ken's father sent him to Japan at approximately twelve years of age to train under the tutelage of the esteemed karate master Gouken. Initially resentful of this decision and eager to return to the United States, Ken eventually came to respect his master deeply and found an unexpected companion in Gouken's other pupil, Gouken's adopted son, Ryu. Despite their contrasting natures, the two formed a powerful bond, becoming best friends and each other's most important rival.

Ken possesses a personality that stands in stark contrast to the serious and stoic demeanor of Ryu. He is characterized by his flashy, confident, and occasionally arrogant attitude, often displaying a large ego and never missing an opportunity to remind others of his abilities. Despite his brashness and short temper, Ken is inherently a good-natured and easygoing individual with a pure heart. He believes firmly in the principles of honor, hard work, discipline, and endurance, and he always treats his opponents with respect, whether it be his master, his best friend, or any other fighter he encounters.

The story of the Street Fighter Alpha series finds Ken returning to the United States after completing his formal training with Gouken. He has recently won the premiere U.S. Martial Arts tournament, a victory that also led to him meeting a young woman named Eliza, who becomes his girlfriend. His sense of triumph is shattered, however, when he returns to his master's training ground to share the good news, only to witness Gouken's death at the hands of the mysterious and powerful warrior Akuma. Consumed by rage and grief, Ken attacks Akuma but is easily defeated with a single blow.

This traumatic event becomes a primary driver for Ken's actions. He begins wandering the world, driven by a dual purpose: to search for Akuma and to find his old friend Ryu, so that he can both tell him of their master's fate and finally secure a definitive victory against him in a match. When he eventually locates Ryu, he finds him burdened by an inner conflict involving a dark, rage-filled power that is trying to overtake him. In an effort to help his friend regain his focus, Ken gives Ryu his own red headband, an act that significantly cheers Ryu up.

Throughout the Alpha series, Ken serves as a key figure who is both a rival and an anchor for Ryu. He also interacts with younger fighters, offering advice to the heiress Karin, suggesting that having a rival is valuable not for proving supremacy but for encouraging continuous training and self-improvement. His role becomes even more critical when he confronts the dictator M. Bison. After a brief battle, Ken is easily defeated and placed under Bison's hypnosis, forced to serve as a pawn to lure Ryu out of hiding. Ryu manages to defeat the brainwashed Ken and break Bison's control, but then falls victim to the same Psycho Power himself. Ken, now freed, allies with Sakura and Sagat to help Ryu break free of Bison's mental grip, ultimately succeeding and reuniting with his friend with a promise of a new duel between them.

Ken's fighting style is rooted in the same martial art as Ryu, but he has adapted it to suit his more aggressive and flamboyant personality. While Ryu's techniques are precise and focused, Ken's are more unorthodox, unpredictable, and flashy. His signature techniques include the Hadouken, a projectile attack that for Ken is less concentrated than Ryu's but still effective. He is best known for his mastery of the Shoryuken, a powerful rising uppercut that he can execute with a much wider arc and greater range than his rival. Ken has refined this technique to such a degree that his strongest Shoryukens can erupt in flames, setting opponents on fire. His Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku is a spinning kick that, in contrast to Ryu's version, typically delivers multiple rapid hits. Ken's abilities in the Alpha series also include a defensive roll and super combos like the Shoryu Reppa, a relentless barrage of multiple Shoryukens.
