TV-Series
Description
Kogitsunemaru is a tachi sword said to have been forged by the Heian‑period smith Sanjou Munechika. According to legend, the blade was completed with the aid of the Inari deity, who struck the hammer in the form of a fox, a story preserved in the Noh play Kokaji. Despite the name Kogitsunemaru meaning “little fox,” the sword itself is a full‑sized tachi, and its anthropomorphized form as a sword warrior is notably tall and robust – a contrast the character himself often remarks upon. He has long white hair that stands up in a shape reminiscent of fox ears and a lustrous, well‑kept coat that he takes pride in.

Kogitsunemaru carries himself with composure and courtesy, addressing his master using the honorific “nushi‑sama.” He is aware of the irony in his name and frequently points out that he is not small, displaying a self‑deprecating yet cheerful humor. At the same time, he enjoys receiving attention and affection from his master, revealing a side that appreciates being doted on and cared for. He takes obvious satisfaction in his appearance, especially the condition of his fur, and responds warmly when others notice it.

As a sword warrior brought to life by a saniwa, Kogitsunemaru is devoted to the mission of protecting history from the historical retrograde army. His loyalty to his master and his sense of duty drive him to fight alongside his comrades to preserve the proper course of events. His polite and gentle nature makes him a reliable presence in the citadel.

In Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, Kogitsunemaru appears as a supporting character within the citadel’s eclectic community. He belongs to the Sanjou group of swords, a connection he shares most notably with Mikazuki Munechika. The two are frequently shown together, and their interactions reflect a familiarity rooted in a common origin as well as mutual respect. Kogitsunemaru also interacts with other sword warriors during both battle formations and the slice‑of‑life episodes that define the series, contributing to the harmonious atmosphere of the citadel.

His relationships are anchored by that bond with Mikazuki Munechika, but he also shares screen time with other blades such as Ishikirimaru and, on occasion, Nikkari – the latter’s fox motif creating a natural point of connection. These interactions are generally light‑hearted and underscore his gentle, accommodating personality.

Though Kogitsunemaru does not have an extensive personal arc, his role in the series steadily integrates him deeper into the citadel’s everyday rhythms. He participates in key battles and seasonal events, gradually strengthening his ties with the other sword warriors. Over the course of the show, he remains a steady, dependable figure whose calm demeanor and subtle humor help maintain the citadel’s cheerful tone.

In combat, Kogitsunemaru wields a long tachi with grace and precision. He fights effectively against the historical retrograde army, combining his physical stature with a composed fighting style. In the original game, his abilities emphasize scouting and mobility, but in the anime his strength is conveyed through his presence in battle rather than through explicit mechanical traits. His distinctive appearance and polite, occasionally playful manner further distinguish him among the cast.
