Description
Imanotsurugi is a tantou, a short sword, who takes the form of a young boy within the citadel of Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru. His design is inspired by a tengu, a creature from Japanese folklore, a choice that honors the legendary tale of his original master, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who was said to have been taught swordsmanship by the king of the tengu, Soujoubou of Mount Kurama. This influence is visible in his clothing, which includes a small tokin hat and distinctive one-toothed geta wooden clogs. He has long white hair and red eyes, and his overall appearance reflects his energetic and spirited nature.
In personality, Imanotsurugi is cheerful, straightforward, and full of youthful exuberance. He approaches life with a playful and carefree attitude, often treating his training and duties as games. He possesses an extraordinary sense of balance, allowing him to jump and run nimbly even while wearing his unusual geta. Despite his cheerful demeanor, he is known to be a bit of a troublemaker, not out of malice but because his boundless energy and simple-minded focus on fun can lead to unintended chaos, such as when he and other swords caused a ruckus on the citadel grounds while playing in the snow. Underneath this childlike exterior, however, is a deep and abiding loyalty. He loves his master, the Saniwa, with his whole heart and is known to push himself to dangerous extremes for their sake, putting their needs before his own safety.
Imanotsurugi's background as a sword carries significant emotional weight. He was famously the personal sword of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a revered historical figure, and was present for his master's final moments, as he was the blade used in Yoshitsune's ritual suicide. This traumatic past has left its mark on him. He experiences painful dreams about his failure to protect his former master and harbors a deep-seated fear of being left completely alone. This history makes his bond with his fellow sword warrior Iwatooshi particularly poignant; Iwatooshi was originally owned by Benkei, the loyal retainer of Yoshitsune, and their shared connection to the same historical period creates a natural kinship between them. He also enjoys stories about brothers, which fits with his youthful and family-oriented worldview.
Within the story of Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, Imanotsurugi is already established as a resident of the citadel. He was the third sword to be obtained by the Saniwa and is often seen interacting with other tantou and short swords. His role is frequently tied to his past, as in one episode where he admits to Yamatonokami and Iwatooshi that he is haunted by dreams of his previous life, leading to a moment of vulnerability where Iwatooshi reassures him that he will never let him feel lonely again. This moment shows his development, as he learns to confront his sorrow not by changing the past, but by cherishing the new bonds he has formed in the present. While he is capable in battle, his defining trait is not a unique supernatural power but his agility and his capacity for a critical, awakened state when pushed to his limits, despite his small stature and lower durability compared to larger swords. Through it all, he remains a spirited and loyal presence, whose journey is about finding happiness and a sense of belonging that transcends the tragedies of his history.
