Description
Hikari Tsutsui, often called Tsuttsun by those close to him, is a third-year high school student who has been stigmatized by his classmates for his identity as an otaku. His deep immersion in anime and video games originally led him to be content with a virtual life, shunning real-world interactions to the point of becoming a self-described loner who held a general disdain for three-dimensional girls, viewing them as the source of his social rejection. Physically, he is depicted as a tall young man with dark, neatly combed-down hair and glasses, though initially his slumped posture and standoffish demeanor created a barrier between himself and others.

At the beginning of the story, Hikari's personality is defined by his insecurity, social awkwardness, and a defensive cynicism born from being an outcast. He isolates himself from the rest of the student body, finding solace only in his fellow otaku and best friend, Yuto Ito. This prickly exterior hides a fundamental lack of self-worth; he is convinced that no one, particularly a beautiful girl, could ever genuinely care for him. This deep-seated insecurity often manifests as self-sabotage within his relationships, as he struggles to accept that he is worthy of affection. His core motivation shifts dramatically over the course of the narrative, evolving from a desire to be left alone in his fantasy world to a sincere effort to navigate a real, three-dimensional romance and become a better person for the girl he loves.

His role in the story is catalyzed by an unexpected encounter with Iroha Igarashi, a stylish and unconventional girl with a notorious reputation. After both are late to school, they are forced to clean the pool together as punishment, an event that leads Iroha to aggressively ask him for a relationship. Though he initially turns her down, claiming she represents everything he hates about real girls, he eventually agrees to give it a try, setting the entire plot in motion. This relationship becomes the central axis of his life, forcing him to confront the outside world he has rejected. The catch is that Iroha is due to transfer schools in just six months, adding a finite timer to their budding romance.

Regarding key relationships, the most significant is with Iroha Igarashi, who nicknames him Tsuttsun and serves as a protective and teasing girlfriend. She constantly pushes him out of his comfort zone and defends him against bullies, even when whispers falsely label him a pedophile due to a misunderstanding. His friendship with Yuto Ito is his only anchor before meeting Iroha; Ito is a loyal and supportive friend who shows no jealousy toward his friend's newfound love and stands by him during major crises. He also develops a platonic friendship with classmate Arisa Ishino, who initially dismisses him but later becomes a trusted confidante and someone he considers his only female friend. This relationship is notably free of romantic tension. In contrast, he shares a distant and strained connection with his younger brother, Kaoru, who openly worries about his own reputation being damaged by association with his older sibling.

His personal development is the core of the narrative. Starting as a boy who barely spoke to anyone, he gradually learns the difficult art of communication within a romantic partnership. He experiences intense jealousy, doubt, and the fear of losing someone, which forces him to mature emotionally. A pivotal moment in his growth occurs when he defends Iroha from her ex-boyfriends, an act of bravery that surprises even himself and earns her genuine respect. When falsely accused of a heinous crime by a school bully, he faces the complete collapse of his reputation, yet persists in trying to protect Iroha from the fallout, demonstrating his growing selflessness. He transforms from a boy who judges Iroha based on rumors to a young man who sees her for who she truly is, ultimately discovering that his previous life of isolation was a defense mechanism against the fear of being hurt.

In terms of notable abilities, beyond his extensive knowledge of anime and video game culture, Hikari is shown to be academically diligent and performs well in his studies. He possesses a latent sense of kindness and a protective instinct that emerges when he sees others being mistreated, a quality that initially surprises him as much as those around him.
