Description
Subaru Sengoku, alias Mr. Black, is a 17-year-old hero wielding the NEXT ability to manifest protective barriers. Originally hailed from Panjourney under the moniker Hello Goodbye, he relocates to Sternbild City after acing HeroTV’s recruitment exams, joining the N.C. 1980 season as a Jungle-sponsored hero. His uncompromising idealism—prioritizing lives over sponsorships or ratings—fuels clashes with veteran heroes and corporate interests fixated on profit.

Bold and brash, Subaru’s youth drives his blunt demeanor, exemplified by openly challenging Barnaby Brooks Jr.’s motives post-revenge and sparring with veterans like Ryan over conflicting hero philosophies. His partnership with Thomas Taurus (He Is Thomas) begins combatively: Subaru’s fervent altruism collides with Thomas’s detached pragmatism. Tensions escalate when Subaru’s rashness during a mission causes collateral damage, and later, Thomas’s violent takedown of a criminal injures a civilian, resulting in his suspension.

A turning point emerges when Subaru bridges the estrangement between Thomas and his younger sister Ruby, whom Thomas had isolated to shield from danger. Defying authority to reunite them, Subaru reveals burgeoning empathy, though he deflects gratitude, framing the act as mutual growth. Their alliance stabilizes during battles against foes like Mugan and Fugan, only to regress into rivalry post-crisis, mirroring their unresolved friction.

Subaru’s idealism confronts systemic compromise after condemning Jungle’s profit-centric policies and weathering backlash for a missed emergency call due to technical failures. He adapts by balancing ethics with institutional pragmatism, channeling his barrier ability to safeguard allies—shielding a civilian at the Vinculum ceremony or intercepting attacks targeting Thomas. These acts mark his evolution from solo acclaim to collective duty.

Director Atsuko Kase’s insights layer Subaru’s brashness with quiet depth, hinting at familial devotion beneath his fiery exterior. His arc culminates in Thomas’s departure from Sternbild, leaving Subaru to forge his path as a hero, steadfast in his principles yet tempered by hard-won pragmatism amid corporate pressures.
