Description
Genjirō Tanigaki is a former Private First Class of the 7th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army, hailing from the Ani region of Akita Prefecture in Tohoku. He is a Matagi, a member of a traditional community of bear hunters, and his skills and upbringing are deeply rooted in that heritage. Physically, Tanigaki is an imposing figure with a large, muscular build, dark brown eyes, short black hair, and thick eyebrows. After a confrontation with the protagonist Saichi Sugimoto, he acquires a small scar on his right cheek.
Tanigaki's personality undergoes a significant transformation. Initially, he is portrayed as stern, aloof, and cold, a man who rarely speaks or smiles. This demeanor is a direct result of a tragic personal history. His beloved younger sister, Fumi, died after falling ill, and her husband, who was also Tanigaki’s friend, burned their house down with her body inside. This event, coupled with his mother later dying of grief, drove Tanigaki to join the military to track down his former friend and seek revenge. This single-minded purpose left him a lost and hardened individual. However, after meeting and receiving care from the bear-hunting expert Tetsuzou Nihei, and later being nursed back to health by the Ainu elder Huci and a young boy named Osoma, Tanigaki mellows considerably. He reveals himself to be a deeply caring, honorable, and protective man with a strong sense of righteousness. He is also notably shy about certain personal matters, such as his body and his dancing abilities, feeling great shame if he underperforms.
His primary motivation shifts from revenge to finding a purpose and protecting those he comes to care for. He struggles with his identity as a soldier, feeling skeptical about military life after the horrors of the Russo-Japanese War. He eventually deserts the 7th Division, finding a new sense of belonging within an Ainu village. Driven by a powerful sense of duty and a need to repay his debts, he vows to protect the Ainu girl Asirpa and ensure her safe return to her grandmother, Huci. This mission to protect others becomes his new purpose.
In the story, Tanigaki is initially a pursuer of the main characters, Sugimoto and Asirpa. His role evolves as he becomes separated from the 7th Division, forms bonds with the Ainu community, and eventually becomes a key ally to Sugimoto. His knowledge of hunting, survival, and his sharpshooting abilities make him a formidable asset. He serves as a bridge between the military world, his Matagi traditions, and Ainu culture.
Key relationships define his character arc. His brief time with Tetsuzou Nihei, who treats his wounds and questions his direction in life, leaves a profound and lasting impact, with Tanigaki inheriting Nihei's rifle and even his peculiar habit of shouting "erection" when he accomplishes something. The kindness of Huci and Osoma, who take him in, gives him a new family and a reason to stay, cementing his loyalty to them. He forms a deep bond with the young boy Cikapasi, acting as a father figure and mentor, before eventually giving him Nihei's rifle to start his own journey. His relationship with Inkarmat, an Ainu fortune teller, develops from a shared goal into a romantic partnership; they later have a daughter and many sons together.
Throughout the series, Tanigaki develops from a revenge-driven, emotionally frozen soldier into a warm, protective, and loyal father figure. His journey is one of self-discovery, as he abandons the toxic loyalty of the 7th Division to forge his own path based on personal honor and love. He finds his place not on a battlefield, but as a protector of a family and a culture he has come to respect.
Notable abilities include his prowess as a sharpshooter and his expert skills in hunting and survival, all inherited from his Matagi upbringing. He is also a surprisingly skilled cook, famous among other characters for his recipe for "kanemochi," a type of walnut rice cake from his hometown. His intelligence and patience, often demonstrated by his quiet, observant nature, allow him to assess situations carefully before acting.
