Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII, the central figure of the anime Lupin the IIIrd: Goemon's Blood Spray, is the thirteenth-generation descendant of the legendary outlaw Ishikawa Goemon. He is a modern-day samurai who carries the ancestral sword Zantetsuken, a blade of legendary sharpness capable of cutting through virtually any substance. While his stoic and reserved demeanor is a constant, this film places his strict personal code of honor at the very center of the narrative, presenting a story that delves deeply into the pressures and rituals of his warrior path outside of his usual role as a member of Lupin III's gang.

In this story, Goemon is hired as a bodyguard for Makio Inaniwa, a yakuza boss on a cruise ship casino. This assignment tests his professional pride, as the gang's own men distrust the outsider. The situation catastrophically unravels when a hulking and terrifyingly powerful mercenary known as Hawk, the "Ghost of Bermuda," attacks the ship with the goal of killing Lupin, who is attempting a heist at the same time. During the ensuing chaos, Goemon is forced into a confrontation with Hawk, but he is defeated with humiliating ease. Worse still, his employer dies in the fire and confusion, leaving Goemon's honor in tatters as he is unjustly blamed for failing to protect him.

This failure is the engine for Goemon's entire character arc in the film. He is a man defined by loyalty and a deep sense of duty, and the loss of his employer is an unbearable stain on his samurai soul. His internal conflict is profound; he becomes desperate to atone and restore his honor through revenge, but his initial attempt leads to a second, even more devastating defeat where Hawk actually breaks the Zantetsuken. Humiliated and frustrated, Goemon retreats to undergo brutal, self-imposed training to understand his failure and unlock a new level of prowess. His key relationship with Lupin and Jigen is placed in a supportive, almost observational role, as they watch over him without interfering in his personal quest for self-improvement, a testament to their deep, unspoken respect for his warrior code.

Throughout this ordeal, Goemon's core personality traits are pushed to their extremes. He is a man of few words, intensely focused, and shares a more amicable rapport with the gunslinger Daisuke Jigen than the often-frustrating Lupin. His trust in the femme fatale Fujiko Mine remains low, but his primary drive is internal, rooted in a spiritual connection to his sword and a desire to be a worthy vessel for its power. His most notable abilities are, of course, centered on his peerless swordsmanship. However, Goemon's Blood Spray focuses less on his ability to slice through physical objects and more on his capacity for growth. Through his grueling training, he is able to hone his senses to a razor's edge and awaken a "sixth sense" that allows him to predict his opponent's movements. In the film's bloody climax, this new ability allows him to finally defeat Hawk, not by cutting down an unworthy object, but by facing a worthy opponent in a duel that reaffirms his principles and allows him to regain his shattered honor.
