Description
Pyunma, designated Cyborg 008, is a character from the Japanese anime Cyborg 009 Call of Justice. He is a man of African origin, specifically from Kenya, and possesses a quiet and intelligent demeanor. His physical appearance includes dark gray skin, black eyes, and a light gray flat crewcut. He typically wears the standard 00 Cyborg uniform, a red double-breasted military-style jacket with padded shoulders and black armbands, along with a holster for his sidearm.

Before being transformed into a cyborg, Pyunma was a freedom fighter. In this version of his backstory, he fought as a guerrilla soldier against oppressive forces in his homeland. He was captured by the agents of the terrorist organization Black Ghost after being caught in the crossfire during a battle. He was then forcibly taken to a Black Ghost laboratory and converted into an advanced cybernetic soldier, receiving the designation 008 as the eighth cyborg in the 00 series.

Pyunma is a serious, determined, and strong-willed individual. His personality is informed by his past as a soldier, making him a pragmatic decision-maker and a reliable tactician for the team. Unlike many of his comrades, he had formal combat training before his capture, which gives him valuable expertise in guerrilla warfare and makes him an effective field operative in both land and sea-based missions. His primary motivation stems from a desire to use his abilities to fight against Black Ghost and prevent others from suffering the same fate he did. He is deeply committed to his fellow 00 cyborgs, having escaped Black Ghost with them, and they form a surrogate family as they travel and battle evil together.

Pyunma's role on the team is largely defined by his unique cybernetic abilities. He is an aquatic specialist, having been engineered specifically for underwater combat and reconnaissance. His primary enhancement is a set of mechanical lungs that allow him to breathe underwater at any depth and withstand the immense pressure of the deep sea, even at 10,000 meters. This, combined with propellers installed in his feet, grants him incredible speed and maneuverability in the water, making him the team's foremost expert for naval missions. He is sometimes shown piloting the team's amphibious aircraft, the Dolphin.

Key relationships are central to his character. He shares a strong bond of trust and mutual respect with Dr. Gilmore, the scientist who helped the cyborgs escape and who acts as a father figure to them. Another crucial relationship is with his comrade Albert Heinrich, Cyborg 004. After Pyunma is severely injured and receives an unwanted body modification from Dr. Gilmore that makes him look less human, he becomes horrified. It is Heinrich, who himself has struggled with his own extensive cybernetic form, who helps Pyunma come to terms with his new appearance and integrate his enhanced abilities into his fighting style.

His personal history is defined by his life before becoming a cyborg. In the African nation of Muamba, which was under the control of a dictator, Pyunma fought alongside his friends Kabore and Masmado. After his abduction and transformation, he discovered that his friend Masmado had also been captured by Black Ghost and converted into a brainwashed cyborg soldier called Number One. This forces Pyunma into a tragic confrontation where he must fight and ultimately kill his former friend to protect others, an event that provides him with a painful but necessary closure regarding his past. He also reunites with Kabore and helps liberate his homeland from tyranny.

Over the course of his story, Pyunma undergoes significant development, particularly concerning his own identity. Initially, he accepts his role but is later deeply disturbed when an upgrade further erodes his human appearance. Through the support of his team, he learns to accept himself and use his new form to its full potential, transforming a source of personal trauma into a strength. In the Call of Justice storyline, his abilities are further expanded upon. While his core power is underwater activity, later portrayals grant him hydrokinetic capabilities, allowing him to mentally manipulate water pressure in his immediate vicinity or even inside an enemy's body, causing devastating internal damage. This makes him an even more formidable combatant, especially against technologically advanced foes.
