TV-Series
Description
Kanna Kamui is a young female dragon who has been exiled from her own world as a direct consequence of her disruptive pranks. It is said that her actions, born from a desire for attention due to parental neglect, led to the destruction of a sacred and precious artifact, the Dragon Pearl. Upon her banishment, she ventures to the human world seeking out Tohru, a fellow dragon she knows from her homeland, with the initial intention of convincing Tohru to return with her.
In her human guise, Kanna takes on the appearance of a small girl, roughly equivalent to a nine-year-old child. She stands approximately one hundred twenty centimeters tall and has a petite frame. Her most distinctive features are her hair, which is white with lavender tips, and her large, vivid blue eyes. Her typical outfit merges gothic lolita fashion with traditional patterns, including a white capelet, a pink blouse, and a frilly skirt, and she is almost always seen carrying the puffball tip of her tail, which she can transform into an electrical plug. In her true form, she becomes a large, feathered white dragon, standing ten meters tall, with a beaked mouth and avian wings.
Kanna’s personality is a blend of her nature as a powerful dragon and her mental state as a child. She is typically quiet, stoic, and speaks in short, direct sentences, but her emotional range is broad and deeply felt. She is curious, playful, and prone to mischief, often with an endearingly deadpan expression. She enjoys simple pleasures like eating sweets and taking naps, but also retains dragon-like habits, such as consuming small insects and animals whole. Despite her cool demeanor, she is lonely and craves affection and connection, becoming very attached to those who show her kindness.
Her primary motivation throughout the story is to find a place where she belongs. After being cast out by her parents, she seeks stability and family, and this search is what drives her to integrate into human society. Her role in the story is initially as a catalyst for conflict, but she quickly becomes a central figure representing the theme of found family. She is a frequent source of humor derived from the contrast between her innocent appearance and her immense, otherworldly power.
Kanna’s most significant relationships are within the household she comes to live in. She initially views Kobayashi with suspicion and jealousy, accusing her of seducing Tohru away from their world. However, after Kobayashi offers her a home, Kanna grows to love her dearly, clearly viewing the human office worker as a mother figure. Her relationship with Tohru is also central; she respectfully calls her Lady Tohru and looks up to her as an older sister figure, learning about the modern world from her. At school, she forms a significant bond with her classmate, Riko Saikawa. While Riko is openly infatuated with her, Kanna reciprocates a deep affection, even expressing a desire to have a relationship with her that mirrors the one she sees between Tohru and Kobayashi.
Throughout the series, Kanna undergoes a subtle but clear development. She transitions from a distrustful, lonely exile to a cherished member of a family. Her initial wariness of humans fades as she becomes attached to Kobayashi and eagerly adapts to school life, learning how to navigate friendships and societal rules. Her emotional growth is highlighted by moments where her desire for belonging becomes paramount, such as when she yearns to participate in a school sports festival.
As a dragon, Kanna possesses an array of extraordinary abilities. Her primary elemental power is the generation and manipulation of electricity, for which she is known as a thunder beast. Unlike older dragons, she cannot produce her own mana, so she must absorb it from her surroundings. To do this in the mana-scarce human world, she transforms the puffball tip of her tail into an electrical plug, which she inserts into wall outlets to recharge. When fully charged, she demonstrates immense physical power, including superhuman strength, speed, and durability, and can fly even in her human form by manifesting small wings. She is also quick to learn, once mastering English in a matter of minutes while visiting New York, and later uses knowledge from school to focus her electricity into powerful charged-particle beams. Despite her power, her childlike mentality and relative inexperience mean she cannot perform complex magic, like perception-blocking spells, which other dragons can. She is described as being over fourteen thousand years old, though her mental and emotional maturity is that of an elementary school child.
