Description
A hero from the Celtic legends of Ulster, Cú Chulainn is a member of the Red Branch Knights and is renowned as the region's strongest warrior. While he is famous for wielding a demonic spear bestowed by his mentor Scáthach, the ruler of the Land of Shadows, he is also a formidable practitioner of rune magecraft, the magic of Northern Europe. In the events of Fate/Grand Order: First Order, he is summoned not in his usual Lancer class, but as a Caster. Despite the shift in his magical abilities and equipment, his core personality remains essentially the same as his Lancer incarnation from other works. However, he himself finds this new form somewhat awkward and has admitted that he cannot calm down, often expressing a clear preference for his usual spear.
Manifesting as a Caster, Cú Chulainn imposes upon himself the role of a guide. While he is not a true Druid, he takes on the responsibilities of one, believing that he should illuminate the path forward for his Master as long as they exist together. His motivations are straightforward; he holds no specific wish for the Holy Grail, and if pressed to name one, he would jokingly say he wants a spear, which is hardly the true purpose of his summoning.
Within the story of First Order, which takes place in the corrupted city of Fuyuki, Cú Chulainn serves as a key ally to the protagonists from Chaldea. He is first encountered after having already single-handedly defeated the Servants Hassan of the Cursed Arm and Darius III. He provides crucial information about the state of the corrupted city and the nature of the enemy Servants. He spars with the Shielder, Mash Kyrielight, to help her awaken her defensive Noble Phantasm instinctively in a moment of danger, rather than through a direct attack as in the original game. Later, he engages in a close battle with the archer EMIYA, managing to defeat him. He ultimately participates in the final confrontation, delivering the decisive attack to the corrupted king, Artoria Alter, using his powerful Noble Phantasm.
His key relationships in this narrative are primarily with the Chaldea team. He acts as a mentor and a powerful combatant on their behalf. His dynamic with Mash is one of a teacher pushing a student to realize her potential, while his relationship with EMIYA is that of a rival, marked by mutual recognition of each other's abilities. He also appears to have a pre-existing awareness of the protagonist, Ritsuka Fujimaru, and treats them as a comrade. He does not have significant interaction with the other corrupted Servants of Fuyuki, viewing them primarily as obstacles to be overcome.
While his appearance in First Order does not allow for deep personal development, his role highlights his adaptability and his consistent nature as a reliable and honorable warrior. He accepts his unusual summoning as a Caster and uses his abilities to their fullest to aid his new allies, showing his loyalty and commitment to seeing the mission through. His final words, expressing a hope to be summoned as a Lancer next time, underscore his personal feelings about his class and hint at the more familiar form he prefers to take.
As a Servant, Cú Chulainn boasts a set of notable abilities. Despite being a Caster, he retains his incredible survivability, largely due to his Protection from Arrows skill, which allows him to evade most projectiles, and his Battle Continuation skill, which enables him to fight on even when mortally wounded. His primary class skill is Territory Creation, allowing him to create a workshop advantageous for a magus. However, his main asset as a Caster is his rune magecraft, which is of a higher rank than when he is a Lancer. Through the flexible use of runes, he can produce powerful and diverse effects, including heat and flame attacks that are his specialty.
His signature Noble Phantasm in this form is the Wicker Man. This anti-army Noble Phantasm summons a giant construct made of countless wooden branches, wreathed in flames, which attacks the target by trapping them in its cage-like body and inflicting massive heat and fire damage. Though it is originally a tool of Celtic Druids for sacrifice, the Wicker Man manifested by Cú Chulainn contains no offerings and goes berserk, seeking the sacrifices it requires. It is with this devastating ability that he delivers the final blow to Artoria Alter in the film.
