Description
Iwabee Yuino is a young ninja from Konohagakure, the Village Hidden in the Leaves. He is physically characterized by his tanned complexion, stern dark brown eyes, and straight dark brown hair, which he almost always keeps covered by a distinctive red cap with a blue string. At a height of 167 cm, he is noticeably taller than most of his classmates, a fact explained by his status as a repeater in the Ninja Academy.

His background is defined by a sharp contrast between natural talent and academic failure. From a young age, Iwabee dreamed of becoming a powerful and famous ninja, admiring figures like the Seventh Hokage, Naruto Uzumaki. He enrolled in the Academy with high hopes and consistently scored top marks in all practical, physical, and ninjutsu-based exercises, earning praise even from his instructors. However, he possessed a strong aversion to the non-ninja subjects required by the curriculum, such as book studies. This led him to fail the written portions of the graduation exam twice, causing him to be held back while his former friends moved on to become full-fledged ninja.

This string of failures deeply affected Iwabee's personality. Frustrated and blaming the new era's emphasis on both scholastic and physical skills for his predicament, he became rebellious, blunt, and domineering. He began skipping classes and developed a harsh, confrontational attitude, particularly towards the younger students whom he viewed as weak and lazy, taking advantage of the peaceful times to become ninja only in name. Valuing strength above all else, he once openly proclaimed that strong people can do as they please and had a short temper when his views were challenged. He also harbored a romanticized admiration for the previous era of constant war, believing it was the true forge of mighty ninja.

A significant turning point in his life was meeting Boruto Uzumaki. Initially, Iwabee despised Boruto, seeing him as an overly privileged son of the Hokage who coasted on his father's legacy. A fight between them changed his perspective. Amazed by Boruto's strong will and refusal to give up, Boruto in turn helped Iwabee realize he was a hypocrite for avoiding his own problems. Iwabee forfeited the fight and, afterwards, became much more civil and integrated with Boruto and his classmates, even starting to make a serious, if still difficult, effort to improve his academic studies.

His motivations are rooted in a deep desire for recognition and to prove his worth as a ninja, not just in name but in spirit. He dreams of becoming like his hero, Naruto, whom he respects not only for his strength but for overcoming a difficult start to reach legendary fame. This desire is balanced by a newfound loyalty to his friends. A personal and dark motivation comes from his family history: his grandfather was killed by Yagura Karatachi, the Fourth Mizukage of Kirigakure, during the village's brutal Bloody Mist era. This history initially made Iwabe deeply distrustful and resentful of Kiri and anyone associated with it.

Within the story, Iwabe serves as a key supporting character and a member of the new generation. After finally graduating, he was placed in Team 5 alongside his classmates Denki Kaminarimon and Metal Lee, under the leadership of the jonin Ise Udon. His role often highlights the theme of overcoming personal flaws and the value of finding a balance between traditional strength and new-era knowledge, such as academics and technology. He participates in major events, including the Genin Graduation Exams and the Chunin Exams, where his team was eliminated by the powerful Shinki from the Hidden Sand.

His key relationships are central to his development. His rivalry and friendship with Boruto Uzumaki was the catalyst for his initial change of heart. His bond with Denki Kaminarimon is particularly unique; while Iwabe helps Denki with physical and ninjutsu training, Denki assists him with his studies and even teaches him practical skills like mechanics, showing a mutually supportive dynamic that transcends their different strengths. With Metal Lee, he shares a bond of mutual respect for physical prowess, hard work, and a shared admiration for powerful taijutsu users and the traditional way of the ninja.

Iwabe's notable abilities are primarily in the field of Earth Release. From a young age, he demonstrated high proficiency with this nature transformation, capable of performing techniques like the defensive Earth Style Mud Wall, as well as more creative uses such as forming weapons or large structures from the surrounding ground. His signature weapon is a black jō staff, which he can infuse with his earth chakra to transform into a large, versatile tool like a hammer or pickaxe. He also fights effectively with the staff on its own. Adding to his versatility, a sword is hidden within the staff, allowing him to switch to kenjutsu when needed. Later in the series, he also shows aptitude in other areas, learning medical ninjutsu and demonstrating an ability to perform Cooperation Ninjutsu and even some basic fūinjutsu (sealing techniques) in tandem with his teammates.
