Description
Code is a prominent antagonist in the Boruto manga and anime series, recognized as the last surviving Inner of the secret organization Kara. Following the death of Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, the organization's true leader, Code inherits his master's will and assumes the role of Kara's new leader.
His background is rooted in tragedy and a failed ambition. Code was one of fifteen children subjected to a brutal ritual by Jigen and the scientist Amado to become a suitable vessel, or Kāma, for Isshiki's resurrection. Only Kawaki was deemed a viable vessel, while the other candidates died. Code, however, miraculously survived the process, but his Kāma manifested as a unique White Kāma. Unlike a standard black Kāma, which allows an Ōtsutsuki to overwrite the host's very existence and be reborn, Code's White Kāma is a dud. It cannot serve as a backup for Isshiki's soul, but it still grants him immense physical power and combat abilities that, without restriction, surpass even those of Jigen, Isshiki's flawed vessel. Because of this power, which threatened to undermine Jigen's authority, the scientist Amado was forced to install limiters on Code's body, which only he could deactivate. Code was spared from disposal due to his unwavering and fanatical loyalty to Isshiki.
Code's personality is a complex mixture of arrogance, vindictiveness, and profound religious zealotry. He exhibits a mocking and superior demeanor, openly criticizing weaker allies like Delta and expressing a desire to kill his enemies personally. His defining trait, however, is his near-worship of Isshiki and the entire Ōtsutsuki clan. He fully understands their parasitic nature—that they travel from planet to planet, planting God Trees to consume all life to produce a Chakra Fruit—yet he reveres them as gods and was willing to be sacrificed as a vessel for their resurrection. This devotion fueled a deep, bitter jealousy towards Kawaki, who was chosen as Isshiki's vessel. Code despises Kawaki not only for this favored status but also for Kawaki's own antagonism towards being a vessel, which Code viewed as an insult to the gift he himself was denied. Despite his grand ambitions, his arrogance and overconfidence often undermine him, leading to humiliating defeats against opponents who prove to be far stronger, such as Daemon and later Boruto.
Motivated by Isshiki's final decree, Code swears to continue the Ōtsutsuki clan's legacy by cultivating a new God Tree on Earth and consuming its Chakra Fruit. This act would allow him to evolve into a true, god-like Ōtsutsuki, transcending his failed status. His primary goal is to avenge his master's death, and he holds Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Boruto, and Kawaki personally responsible. To achieve this, he plans to sacrifice either Boruto or Kawaki to the Ten-Tails he guards, which will then grow into the God Tree.
In his role within the story, Code serves as a major antagonistic force after Isshiki's defeat. Realizing he is not strong enough with his limiters active to face the combined forces of Konohagakure, he acts cautiously and strategically. He travels to one of Boro's secret facilities to awaken two powerful, modified cyborgs that Boro had kept hidden: Ada (Eida) and her brother Daemon. While he forms an alliance with them to help remove his limiters and capture Kawaki, the plan backfires. He instantly falls victim to Ada's supernatural charm ability, becoming completely infatuated and loyal to her, which compromises his authority. His relationship with Ada and Daemon is a key part of his development, as it transforms him from a feared, self-proclaimed successor to a servile underling in a more powerful ally's shadow. Later, after a rift forms and he is brutally defeated by Daemon, Code's desperation leads him to split the Ten-Tails into an army of Claw Grimes, which unexpectedly evolve into independent and overwhelmingly powerful beings called the "Human God Trees" that he cannot control.
Code possesses several notable abilities, most of which stem from his White Kāma. His primary combat skill is the use of "Claw Marks." He can create sharp, claw-like slashes that leave behind pitch-black marks in the air or on any surface. These marks act as a transportation network, allowing Code to instantly teleport himself or any part of his body from one mark to another, similar to a space-time ninjutsu. He can also manifest claw-like weapons from his hands for close-quarters combat. His physical prowess, including speed and strength, is tremendously high due to the White Kāma, and it is stated that without his limiters, his full power is extraordinary, even surpassing Jigen's. However, his power is not absolute, and he has consistently faced superior opponents, leading many to see him as an antagonist who has failed to live up to his initial potential. His development sees him repeatedly attempting to assert dominance, only to be outmatched and outmaneuvered, forcing him to rely on others and continually revise his plans as the situation spirals beyond his control.
