Description
Hikayu Hoshikawa is a character from the anime Re:CREATORS, where she appears as a creation brought into the real world from her native fictional universe. She originates as the main heroine of a dating simulation game titled Star Sky Milky Way, which was originally released as an adult game before being adapted into an all-ages version. In her own story, she is a seventeen-year-old high school student and the love interest of the game's protagonist, a childhood friend named Masayuki.
Physically, Hikayu is described as being of average height with pink hair that she typically styles into half-twin tails, held with ribbon accessories. She has red eyes and is most often seen in her school uniform, which consists of a white blouse, a green blazer, a red skirt, black knee socks, and brown strap shoes. Her overall design is meant to embody the classic archetype of a bishoujo game female lead.
In terms of personality, Hikayu is characterized by her gentle, shy, and somewhat self-doubting nature. She is deeply devoted to Masayuki, for whom she holds strong romantic feelings, and is generally loyal to those she cares about. However, beneath her meek exterior lies a resilient and determined spirit. She is capable of standing up for what she believes is right and can be surprisingly persuasive when the situation calls for it, such as when she helps convince a conflicted Selesia Upitiria to take action. A notable source of distress for her is the sudden awareness that her personal story and private moments have been witnessed by countless people in the real world, a revelation that causes her intense embarrassment.
As a character from a romantic slice-of-life game, Hikayu initially possesses no combat abilities or special powers whatsoever, being a completely ordinary schoolgirl. Her primary role within the story is that of an anomaly who forces the other characters and the audience to reconsider the nature of fictional worlds. Her lack of power becomes a central plot point, as the government plans for all creations, including non-combatants like her, to participate in a project called the Elimination Chamber Festival. This predicament leads to a unique solution proposed by one of her creators, a scenario writer named Nishio Ohnishi. He suggests using a fan disc, an add-on expansion for her original game, to grant her new abilities. This results in her transformation into a powerful alter ego known as the Extreme Final Legend Martial Artist Hikayu.
In this transformed state, Hikayu gains superhuman strength and martial arts prowess, allowing her to fight on par with other combat-oriented creations. She wields a pair of nunchaku and can perform devastating techniques such as the Killing Cosmo Hell Fist and the Cosmic Hell Fist, which involve punching the ground to create shockwaves or launching herself at an opponent encased in an energy sphere. However, this new power comes with a significant drawback for her: her fighting costume is extremely revealing, a fact that causes her profound shame and embarrassment. Despite this, she uses her newfound abilities to join the main group of creations, achieving a notable victory in a battle against another character, Sho Hakua.
Her key relationships are central to her development. Her devotion to Masayuki is her primary motivation, and she ultimately credits her entire experience in the real world for bringing them closer together. She has a complicated and often exasperating relationship with her creator, Nishio Ohnishi, whose perverse enthusiasm for putting her in embarrassing situations (especially with her costume) frequently leads her to physically lash out at him, yet his actions are what enable her to contribute meaningfully to the group's efforts. She also forms bonds of friendship with other creations, including Meteora Österreich, Selesia Upitiria, and Blitz Talker, as they work together in the real world.
Throughout the story, Hikayu undergoes a distinct arc of growth. She begins as a frightened and helpless individual, overwhelmed by her circumstances. By gaining power through the fan disc, she is able to actively participate in the conflict, even bravely attacking a powerful mecha with her bare hands to buy her allies time. Later, during the final confrontation, her combat form is stripped away by the antagonist Altair using a power called Concept Source, returning her to her original, powerless state. Altair spares her, seeing no need to harm an unarmed person. In this vulnerable moment, Hikayu demonstrates her greatest strength not through fighting, but through her character, as she still finds the courage to face Altair without fear and comforts her grieving friends. After the crisis is resolved, she learns that due to the popularity she gained, an anime spin-off based on her martial artist form is being produced, much to her continued embarrassment. She ultimately returns to her own world, grateful for the experience and her reunion with Masayuki.
