Description
Gakuto Sasajima is the founder and captain of the Buzou High School quiz club who serves as a central figure in the narrative. A former member of the prestigious Kaijou Middle School quiz team, where he was known as an ace buzzer-beater, he chose to transfer to Buzou for reasons that remain unexplained, bringing his expertise to a school with no prior competitive quiz program.

In personality, Gakuto is highly eccentric and deeply passionate about quiz games, to the point of carrying a defunct buzzer with him to practice his timing at any moment. He possesses a calm and unshakable demeanor, often smiling and pushing his glasses up in a dramatic gesture when observing clever strategies or correct answers from his teammates. Despite the odd looks and laughter his enthusiasm sometimes attracts, he remains entirely unperturbed and uses every opportunity to advocate for his club, treating recruitment with the same opportunistic mindset applied to quiz competitions. His goofy and theatrical overselling of quizzing makes him a memorable presence on screen.

Gakuto's primary motivation is to build a strong and successful quiz club at Buzou High. He demonstrates a profound understanding of the soul of competitive quizzing, including its strategies, etiquette, and the importance of preparation. He is always professional in his conduct, taking responsibility when a club member makes a mistake and disapproving of unsportsmanlike tactics from others.

Within the story, Gakuto acts as the leader and primary mentor for the first-year members, particularly the protagonist, Shiki Koshiyama. Recognizing Shiki's latent talent and extensive book knowledge, Gakuto pays him special attention, nurturing his abilities and teaching him how to best apply his knowledge in a quiz format. While at first reluctant, Shiki comes to see Gakuto as a trustworthy and respectable senior. Gakuto leads by example in competitions, consistently scoring highly and demonstrating that his team's preparation is sufficient, even when questions seem difficult.

A key relationship exists with his younger sister, Jinko Sasajima, with whom he is very close. Despite looking nothing alike, they are often seen together, and Jinko supports the club in her own way by using her interest in electronics to build a low-cost quiz buzzer system for them. Gakuto shows a caring side by giving her a ride to school and being mindful of their finances while purchasing components.

As a character, Gakuto sees little need for dramatic change himself; rather, his role is to facilitate the growth of others. His mysterious background, moving from a champion middle school to an unknown high school, adds an intriguing layer to his character as he seeks to build a new legacy from the ground up.

Notable abilities include his exceptionally fast buzzer reaction time, which he constantly hones. He is always thoroughly prepared, famously having researched the website of a rival school to secure a tiebreaker answer. He has an encyclopedic memory for common quiz questions and tries to instill in his juniors the same dedication to preparation, such as by distributing questionnaires filled with recurring problems for them to memorize. Standing at 183 cm tall with black hair, his design includes glasses that have become a trademark of his composed and analytical presence.
