Description
Ozen, also known as the Immovable, the Immovable Lord, and Ozen the Unmoving Mountain, is a delver holding the elite rank of White Whistle. She serves as the guardian of the Seeker Camp, an observation base in the Second Layer of the Abyss, where she commands a small team of cave raiders called the Subterranean Bandits, also known as the Layabouts. Despite appearing to be a woman in her prime, she has held the rank of White Whistle for more than fifty years, making her one of the oldest and most experienced delvers in the city of Orth. She stands over two meters tall, and her dark clothing and towering frame give her the appearance of a giant shadow. Her unusual hairstyle hides deformities on her scalp that resulted from long exposure to the Curse of the Abyss, which gradually marks the body when a delver repeatedly pushes the limits of sanity and survival during deep dives.
Ozen has a cold, cynical, and often openly cruel manner. She possesses a dark sense of humor that can border on the macabre, and she keeps her emotions tightly controlled, with complete command over her facial expressions, so her true feelings are difficult to read. She rarely bothers to explain her reasons, and even when she does, it can be impossible to tell whether she is being truthful or simply toying with the person. She is a thoroughgoing realist who measures people by facts, results, and their chances of survival rather than by hopes or intentions, and she has no hesitation about speaking harsh truths, even to children. She uses fear, intimidation, and blunt honesty to test whether someone truly has the resolve to descend into the Abyss, and while she often takes this too far, those who know her well consider her an excellent teacher who genuinely means well beneath her rough exterior.
Ozen's motivations revolve around maintaining the standards of delvers, gauging the readiness of those who wish to go deeper, protecting the people under her care, and preserving the truth about events that shaped the current generation of cave raiders. She is a living witness to the secrets surrounding Lyza and Lyza's daughter Riko. She was Lyza's mentor and close friend, she was present when Lyza gave birth to Riko in the depths, and she kept the Curse-Repelling Vessel, the relic that revived Riko when she was stillborn. Her willingness to help Riko and her companions reflects her conviction that survival in the Abyss depends on honest preparation rather than blind optimism.
In the story, Ozen serves as both an obstacle and a guide. When Riko and Reg arrive at the Seeker Camp, Ozen greets them with hostility, threatening their lives and even engaging Reg in a direct fight in order to measure his strength and intentions. Once they prove their determination and capability, she becomes their instructor, teaching them practical survival skills and important knowledge about the Abyss before sending them onward. She also entrusts Riko with the Blaze Reap, the pickaxe-shaped relic once used by her mother Lyza. Violence and cruelty in her case are not simple malice but tools for separating those who are prepared for the depths from those who are not.
Ozen's most important relationship is with Lyza, whom she trained and counted as a close friend and comrade. With Riko, she acts as a stern examiner and later a mentor, holding knowledge of Riko's origins that no one else fully possesses. With Reg, she takes the role of a cautious evaluator, treating him as an unknown being whose power and danger must be assessed. With her disciple Marulk, who lives with her at the Seeker Camp, she is demanding and protective, and her subordinates in the Subterranean Bandits operate under her disciplined command.
Over the course of her appearance, Ozen shifts from seeming like a cruel antagonist into a figure of genuine authority and care. Her harsh behavior is recontextualized as realism born of decades of experience, and her actions show that she takes seriously the lives of those who choose to descend. She is remembered by Lyza as the best of teachers, and her way of guiding others is to make certain that they understand the price of going deeper before they commit to it.
Ozen's most notable ability comes from her use of the Thousand Pins, a set of relic wedges implanted into her body. With one hundred and twenty of these pins embedded in her, she possesses superhuman strength, speed, and longevity, and she is strong enough to lift a gondola carrying thirty people with ease. She is described as a peerless fighter, able to defeat Reg in a direct confrontation, and her monstrous physical power has made her a legend among delvers. Combined with more than half a century of diving experience and a reputation for major discoveries in the Abyss, she stands as one of the most formidable and respected figures in Orth.
