Description
Kōhei Izumi is a Shooter and a member of Tachikawa Squad, which is ranked number one among A-Rank teams in Border. He is recognized as the number two Shooter within the organization, a testament to his exceptional combat abilities and technical skill. Izumi is a tall teenage boy with neck-length dark blond hair and golden eyes. He is known for a lighthearted and casual demeanor, often making jokes and maintaining a humorous attitude even in battle. This outward personality has led to him being grouped with two other high-ranking agents as one of the "A-Rank three idiots," and his particular fixation on bullet triggers has earned him the nickname "bullet idiot." Despite this, Izumi is highly intelligent and a shrewd strategist, characterized by the author as a genius type who does not overthink his actions. He possesses an adaptable way of thinking and an innate perceptiveness that allows him to quickly see through an opponent's fighting style and formulate effective countermeasures.

Izumi's primary motivation is rooted in his genuine enthusiasm for combat and trigger technology. He is deeply passionate about all aspects of shooting, which drives him to constantly experiment and improve. This passion was central to his most notable contribution to Border: the invention of composite bullets. Impulsively trying a combination of two bullet triggers, he succeeded in creating a new class of weapon, demonstrating his intuitive genius. This inventive nature, combined with his love for all-out attacks, defines his approach to fighting. He enjoys the tactical depth of battle and is motivated by the challenge itself.

As a member of the top-ranked A-Rank squad, Izumi plays a crucial role in establishing Tachikawa Squad's dominance. While his captain, Kei Tachikawa, excels at securing solo points as the top Attacker, Izumi acts as one of Border's best supporters. His strength lies not just in overwhelming firepower but in his ability to control the battlefield, corral enemies, and create openings for his teammates to score points. He was tasked with mentoring protagonist Osamu Mikumo, providing patient tactical guidance even though Mikumo lacked natural talent. During the large-scale invasion by the Neighbor nation Aftokrator, Izumi's value was fully displayed. He coordinated with other A-Rank agents to corner and defeat the powerful Ramnein, and later engaged the enemy commander Hyrein in a fierce battle of wits and stamina. Although he was ultimately defeated, his analytical skills allowed him to discern the weaknesses of Hyrein's Alektor trigger, enabling his Sniper allies to land critical hits. Hyrein himself was so impressed by Izumi's prowess that he expressed a desire to capture and recruit him.

Key relationships define Izumi's role in the story. He has a strong, professional bond with his captain, Kei Tachikawa, and the two form the core of their squad's strength. Outside his team, he is close friends with Yosuke Yoneya and Shun Midorikawa, the other members of the "A-Rank three idiots," and the trio fought together effectively during the invasion. He also shares a notable dynamic with Masataka Ninomiya, the number one Shooter. Despite Ninomiya's prickly personality, Izumi gets along with him, and Ninomiya even humbled himself to ask Izumi for guidance on composite bullets. Izumi's relationship with Osamu Mikumo developed into a student-teacher dynamic, with Izumi offering advice and training to help the younger agent grow.

Throughout the series, Izumi exhibits notable personal development in his role as a mentor and team player. While he began as a purely battle-hungry genius, his experiences, particularly the intense fight with Hyrein, reaffirmed his value as a tactical anchor for his allies. His willingness to share his knowledge, even with rivals like Ninomiya, shows a maturity that complements his playful exterior.

Izumi's abilities are built upon a foundation of very high trion levels, placing him among the top four agents in Border. This immense energy reserve allows him to fire a vast number of bullets with overwhelming power. He is a "bare-handed" Shooter, meaning he forms and launches trion cubes directly without a gun-shaped trigger, which gives him greater flexibility. He has achieved Master Class proficiency with all four standard bullet triggers: Asteroid for direct fire, Viper for curved trajectories, Hound for homing attacks, and Meteor for explosives. He is one of only three agents who can create new Viper paths on the fly. However, his signature ability is the invention and mastery of composite bullets, which he can produce in only two seconds. He commonly uses Tomahawk, a homing explosive created from Viper and Meteor, and Gimlet, a high-penetration round created from two Asteroids, which is powerful enough to break a Trion soldier's arm. On defense, his high trion makes his Shield exceptionally durable, and he can use Full Guard to protect himself while baiting enemies into revealing their positions. He also equips the optional Bagworm Trigger to hide himself from radar. Izumi's overall approach combines overwhelming firepower with tactical cunning, making him a versatile and formidable agent.
