Description
Kanae Aira, who participates in the battle as the warrior representing the Tiger and is often referred to as Tora, has a deeply tragic background rooted in prodigious talent and subsequent disillusionment. She was originally a brilliant student at the Aira Dojo, a martial arts school where she was taught the principles of Bu, meaning the power that is practiced and refined, and Michi, the righteous execution of that power. As the single most gifted pupil of her dojo, her path seemed clear: to put her exceptional skills to use on the battlefield to continue her training and serve a purpose. However, the reality of war shattered her ideals. Experiencing the atrocities and hypocrisy of human conflict firsthand led her to a dark conclusion that if humanity were to go extinct, the Earth would be better off.

Unable to reconcile her expectations with reality, Kanae’s personality and motivations became defined by a profound despair and a need for escape. She descended rapidly into alcoholism as a means to forget her psychological torment. This is not a stylistic choice but a deep-seated dependency born from a broken spirit. She appears listless, perpetually intoxicated, and lacking a clear purpose or wish for victory in the Zodiac War. This nihilistic state has caused her to abandon the teachings of her dojo and, in her own perception, her very humanity and reason, transforming her into a seemingly mindless but exceptionally dangerous beast. Despite her drunken stupor, she possesses a peculiar pride, believing that only the weak need to project power, which is why her own formidable aura has faded as her alcoholism progressed. She also maintains peculiar habits such as keeping her nails meticulously decorated, only removing the hybrid polish before a fight because she considers killing with painted nails to be inappropriate.

Within the story of the tournament, Tora plays the role of a wild card whose immense power is barely contained by her psychological fragility. She forms a temporary alliance with Eiji Kashii, the warrior of the Ox, whom she encountered previously in a war zone where he saved her life. This past connection leads her to question him about his philosophy, specifically how he can kill so many and still be convinced he is doing the right thing. She is deeply confused and intrigued by his simple answer that he decides to do the right thing, and then he does it, as her own life has lost all such meaning. In the battles that follow, she demonstrates her ferocity, effortlessly defeating opponents like the Sheep and the zombified Snake and Dragon. Her development is not one of growth or redemption but rather a tragic end to her suffering. After being wounded in the fight against the necromancer Rabbit, who can control the dead, she makes a clear-headed and grim request to Ox. She asks him to finish her off, not because she fears death, but because she refuses to be resurrected and have her corpse controlled and used as a puppet by their enemy. This act represents her final assertion of will, choosing a definitive end over the desecration of her body and skills.

Kanae’s notable abilities are intrinsically linked to her psychological state and physical stature. Despite her small height of 154 centimeters and weight of 42 kilograms, her physical prowess is immense. As the most powerful warrior produced by the Aira clan, she is a master of hand-to-hand combat who can dismember opponents, dodge automatic gunfire, and tear through enemies with her clawed hands. Her signature technique is the Drunken Fist, but unlike a practitioner who merely mimics being drunk, Kanae is genuinely intoxicated. This fighting style becomes more effective the drunker she is, and even more so if she consumes blood, making her movements wildly unpredictable and her attacks devastatingly lethal. This unpredictability is so potent that even the Sheep, whose ability allows him to analyze everything about an opponent with a glance, failed to perceive her as a threat until the moment she cut him in half. Her drunkenness functions as both a psychological crutch and a bizarre combat enhancer, making her one of the most dangerous combatants in the war despite her seemingly degraded mental state.
