TV-Series
Description
Jūzō Suzuya is a Special Class Ghoul Investigator, a position he holds during the events of Tokyo Ghoul:re. Originally found in the 20th ward, he is later affiliated with the 13th ward. He is a young man with a notably androgynous appearance, standing at 160 centimeters tall. His most distinctive features are the numerous stitch marks adorning his body, including his lips, which serve both practical and aesthetic purposes, and his hair, which is pinned up with clips forming the Roman numeral for thirteen. After the two-year time skip leading into:re, his hair is dyed black. He also wears a prosthetic leg to compensate for the one he lost in a previous battle.
Suzuya's background is the root cause of his unique personality and abilities. As a child, he was abducted by a ghoul known as Big Madame, who ran a ghoul circus. Forced to work as a scrapper, he was subjected to horrific physical and psychological abuse, including castration to preserve a youthful, feminine appearance. This treatment stripped him of his ability to feel fear, pain, or moral qualms, leaving him with a vacant, emotionless core. After being rescued by the CCG, his partner, the senior investigator Yukinori Shinohara, became a crucial father figure who offered him genuine care and affection for the first time.
In the first part of the series, Suzuya is characterized by childish, careless, and often violent behavior, showing no concern for property or the lives of ghouls. He is seen talking to himself and lacks a basic understanding of human emotion. By the time of:re, his personality has undergone a significant transformation. While retaining his enthusiasm and resourcefulness as an investigator, he demonstrates greater maturity and an ability to empathize with others, including ghouls. As the leader of his own Suzuya Squad, he is far more invested in the welfare of his CCG colleagues. This development is largely driven by a need to honor the legacy of Shinohara, who lies in a coma, and to do his part for both of them. He forms a particularly close and friendly relationship with Sasaki Haise, the mentor of the Quinx Squad.
Suzuya is a prodigiously talented combatant, possessing an acrobatic fighting style honed from his time in the ghoul circus. He has a high tolerance for pain and is known for his unorthodox, efficient killing methods. In his work, he primarily wields two quinques, weapons made from ghouls' kagune. The first is a bikaku-type named Scorpion 1/56, which consists of fifty-six small switchblade-like knives. His signature weapon is a large, scythe-like rinkaku-type quinque named 13's Jason, created from the kagune of the ghoul Yamori, whom he finished off and claimed as his own. His remarkable abilities and increasingly ruthless efficiency lead some within the CCG, such as Nimura Furuta, to see him as a potential successor to the legendary investigator Kisho Arima, dubbing him "The Next Arima" or "CCG's Jason".
He maintains a significant partnership with his subordinate, Hanbee Abara, a more timid investigator who looks up to him. His most pivotal relationship is with Shinohara, and visiting the comatose man is a key part of his routine. In one scene, he tells Shinohara that he will continue working hard for both of them, calling his mentor his salvation. His development is a journey from an apathetic, traumatized weapon to a composed leader who, while still a lethal fighter, has reclaimed a sense of humanity and purpose through the bonds he has formed.
