Description
Maki Zenin is introduced as a second-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High and a member of the Zenin clan, one of the three great sorcerer families. Birthright is not an advantage for her: she was born with a Heavenly Restriction that grants her superhuman physical abilities in exchange for having almost no cursed energy. In a society that measures worth by cursed energy, the clan treats her as a failure. She leaves the Zenin estate and enrolls at Tokyo Jujutsu High, determined to prove herself purely through physical skill and mastery of cursed tools.

Maki is resolute, pragmatic, and fiercely independent. Years of dismissal forged a blunt, sometimes harsh exterior, but underneath she is deeply loyal to the few people who accept her on her own terms. Her primary motivation has shifted over time: originally she wanted to earn a Grade 1 sorcerer rank and return to the clan as head to silence her critics, but the events of Season 3 transform that ambition into a more radical goal—the complete demolition of the patriarchal system that abused her and her twin sister, Mai.

The Perfect Preparation arc, which forms the first part of the Culling Game storyline, is the crucible of her development. Her father, Ogi Zenin, attempts to kill both Maki and Mai. In a final act of love, Mai uses her Cursed Technique—Construction—to forge a powerful sword for Maki, sacrificing her own life in the process. Mai's death severs the twin bond, allowing Maki's Heavenly Restriction to fully activate. She instantly attains the same physical tier as Toji Fushiguro, the legendary assassin who once nearly killed Satoru Gojo. In the aftermath, Maki returns to the Zenin compound and systematically slaughters the clan members who tormented her and Mai, sparing only those who were not complicit.

Within the Culling Game itself, Maki enters the Sakurajima Colony. Because she produces no cursed energy signature, the game's barriers and tracking systems—designed to detect players through cursed energy—cannot sense her. This makes her effectively invisible to opponents and the game's rules. During her time in the colony, she trains in a simple domain with the sumo-obsessed sorcerer Rokujushi Miyo, engaging in over a thousand rounds of sumo bouts to relax her mind, sharpen her senses, and fully integrate her body and perception.

Her notable abilities stem entirely from her fully realized Heavenly Restriction. She possesses immense physical strength, speed, reflexes, and durability. She can perceive the density and movement of the air, sense vibrations, and anticipate attacks through physical cues rather than cursed energy. She wields a variety of cursed tools, most importantly the sword crafted by Mai, with lethal precision. Her lack of cursed energy makes her a blind spot for any technique or barrier that relies on detecting or tracking cursed energy, granting her a unique advantage against curse users who depend on such sensing.

Key relationships include her bond with Mai, which is the emotional core of her story. Her friendship with Nobara Kugisaki represents a healthier alternative to the toxic clan dynamic: two young women from oppressive backgrounds choosing their own paths. She also shares a mentor-student history with Yuta Okkotsu from the prequel and maintains strong camaraderie with her classmates Panda and Toge Inumaki. Her departure from the Zenin clan and later annihilation of it is her defining act: not revenge, but the deliberate end of an institution built on generational cruelty.

By the end of the Culling Game Part 1 arc, Maki Zenin has evolved from a clan outcast into a warrior who exists entirely outside the jujutsu hierarchy. Her strength is not inherited or granted—it is earned, and it serves as the series' clearest statement that tradition is not owed loyalty simply because it provides a surname.
